Talking Stock bottom end Syclone: 11.45 @ 117.7 MPH

WaaaHooo!! Finally, some new personal bests!

Anyone following my D.I.Y. Vortec head and cam photo install thread knows this, but I just finished upgrading my truck to Vortec heads and a custom turbo cam, on the stock bottom end. My goal has been to have a full weight (3650# race weight), full accessory truck, "upgraded" with quality parts to go fast on the smallest budget possible.

Saturday (November 10th) I drove to the track and made 8 passes and nothing broke!

The best run was 11.458 @ 117.70 MPH!! (The worst run was only a 11.65 @ 116.2, still faster than my old personal best)

Here are the timeslips: (bests in bold)
    Code:
    Run #	60'	1/8 mi	1/8 MPH	1/4 mi	1/4 MPH
    1	1.755	7.471	94.29	11.657	116.23
    2	1.684	7.305	95.18	11.458	117.70
    3	1.685	7.326	94.98	11.500	116.8
    4	1.715	7.374	94.79	11.543	117.05
    5	1.699	7.369	94.90	11.537	116.83
    6	1.681	7.330	95.08	11.480	117.61
    7	1.682	7.321	95.36	11.466	117.95
    8	1.718	7.382	94.77	11.573	115.69
The track was cold and anything more than a 5 PSI launch would give wheelhop as the truck slammed the rear and popped the front and then vice-versa. With front end limiters I believe it can go 1.5 60's and see low 11s.

I found that the PT51 appears to be at it's limit. The fastest runs were the 2 with lowest boost (17-20 PSI on 93 octane with alcohol injection). The 6 runs with 18-22 PSI boost were all slower. I didn't use a TCC lockup switch on any runs.

    Racing Videos!
I had a BLAST at the track and got a lot of positive comments from the crowd! Here are some racing videos:

(High Quality videos are available at my website: http://www.powertuneplus.com/syclone/videos.shtm !!)

Video #1: Run 2: Syclone vs. 03 Cobra There was a guy in the stands next to the video camera that couldn't stop shouting about my truck on this run
Video #2: Run 3: Syclone vs. LS2 GTO This video is funny because it looks like my truck is leap-frogging past the GTO, right off the line as it's bouncing up and down from the uneven front/rear traction You can hear my truck spin its tires once on the launch, and again when the front bounces as the power is hitting at the top of 1st.
Video #3: Run 7: Syclone vs. Nova? on slicks & skinnies There was a woman betting cash on me for this race sitting in front of the video camera, when I pull ahead you can hear her scream! (it was "Real Street Drags" night where side betting is encouraged)

The truck now has 591 miles on since I bolted the Vortecs and custom cam onto the stock bottom end, no problems whatsoever up to 5400 RPM on every run! One thing I noticed from the videos, it definitely got a LOT louder at WOT with the heads/cam upgrade. The dump was never opened and it's a full 3" exhaust with ATR Pitbull muffler.

If you want to know *anything* about my Vortec heads/cam upgrade, it's all covered in my 12 page D.I.Y. Vortec head and cam photo install thread.

Finally, I wrote up two complete budgets & parts lists, one for the vortec head/cam upgrade, and another for the entire truck since 2001 purchase:

    Nice runs!
I was wondering what are the specs on your turbo? Compressor size inducer/exducer,turbine housing A/R?
Also, what tires are you using, those are good 60 ft times.
    Also,do you have a 3" downpipe?

Re: Stock bottom end Syclone: 11.45 @ 117.7 MPH

    Thanks guys!

Rick, it's a PT51 with the one and only PTE SyTy .85 exhaust housing. The specs are on http://www.precisionturbo.net/ under SyTy or Buick turbos. Of course I'm using the PTE 3" downpipe.

Nallj92, the peak WOT timing at high RPM (5400-5500) was 24.5*. I raised it as high as 27* but it didn't seem to make any more power or MPH and it changed from flatline 0.0 knock to a few 4-5* spikes, so I put it back down. So in the end, I was able to run more timing with the Vortecs and cam than I was on the stock motor (that's a lot more variables changed than just the heads however), but it took a complete tune to accomplish that.

    Before / After Performance Comparisons
Finally as far as the gains from the Vortec heads & cam over the stock motor, right now it's a poor comparison because of the PT51 turbo prematurely limiting performance to 17-20 PSI (vs. the 23-27 PSI I was able to run with the same turbo on stock motor). My signature says my best with the PT51/stock motor was 11.79 @ 114 MPH, but that was precisely 4 years ago. Afterwards, my stock transmission failed and things went downhill ever since. With the fully built transmission and 2700 RPM stall torque converter I installed in 2005, the truck would typically run 11.9-11.8 @ 112 best every time to the strip, with a couple 12.0's on the bad runs. It never ran 11.7's or 114 MPH with the stock motor again after I put the built trans/converter in.

So now with it running consistent 11.4-11.6 @ 116-117, all I can say is with the Vortecs/cam, it gained 3.5 tenths and 5 MPH consistently at 17-20 PSI compared to the stock heads/cam at 23-24 PSI.

If at some point I upgrade to a larger turbo capable of running 23-24 PSI, we'll have a much better direct before/after comparison.
