    Re: Under the hood insulation?

I think it has come down to price

    New insulator: $40 to $60

    Can'o'Krylon - $3

OK, so really it is Duplicolor but you know what I mean.

    Re: Under the hood insulation?

Hmm..in my opinion, nothing looks better than a clean and new insulation under the hood. You'll prb find that it's easier to order that and replace than to clean, paint, and polish the metal to look good. Also, it WILL discolor your hood over time if you leave it off. Just like the others said, that heat will bake your paint and just cause too many prbs which won't be noticable until it's too late.

When I restored my Fairlane, we didn't add insulation until maybe 15 years later. During that time we watched the paint on the hood slowly discolor. It still shines up nice and is show quality, but when you are looking that close at a car, you notice the subtle changes in things like that in the paint.

I have a liner on my cowl hood. It's not new looking, but it looks good.

    Re: Under the hood insulation?

Yeah, I am on the fence about discoloring the paint and all. I have heard the horror stories and I've only had a couple of vehicles with it on there but I have that feeling that every auto maker puts it on there for a reason...I'll let you guys know the outcome of it once it is all done.

That being said, I'd grab one just incase. I kick myself every time I polish the Failane and look at the hood.

I have a Shaker hood system on my Magnum, with the large shaker hole in the hood, and I cut up the insulator to fit and put it back on. It just looks so much better, but also did make the hood feel less flimsy. Plus hood insulation is a flame retardant.

    Re: Under the hood insulation?

So just to follow up on my own post from 4.5 years ago...
I ordered the one from LMC just for the hell of it, and this is the goofy crap that showed up. Just an ugly square piece that looks worse than casino carpet and feels like a home AC/furnace filter. If you google hood insulation, there's a bunch of images of nice OEM looking pieces with ford, chevy, vette, camaro, mustang logos, etc... Are there really no options for us other than the shabby stocker, or this monstrosity from LMC? I wonder if I can paint this thing with that Krylon flat black high temp BBQ paint? I don't really wanna spend $40 to find out and then still have to try to cut it to fit.

I'm sure a really nice one isn't all that necessary, but I wouldn't mind popping the hood and seeing some nice insulation with a Typhoon logo. This is where I put my William Wallace warpaint on and try to convince people on here to go in on getting custom ones made for a stupid amount of money! Who's with me?!?!?! (insert Howard Dean araahhhh!!!!) ...no? alright.

    Re: Under the hood insulation?

Try these. The QuietRide series or AcoustiHood. I think that's what LMC sells. They have a hoodliner with Syclone logo as the very first pic. Looks NICE! They have Typhoon and Sonoma GT, also.

The one LMC sells is the one I posted the pic of. It's basically a 4'x4' piece of a furnace filter that looks like it was used as a chimney sweep.

I checked out that QuietRide site before I posted this thread, but when I looked, they didn't have anything for the S series trucks listed, it said "coming soon". That Syclone hood liner looks awesome!

However, my concern is that it's "high temp" ABS plastic. The google machine says ABS melts at 221*F which has me a lil leary. Even with a turbo blanket I think a WOT blast would melt it. I shot em an email and asked them to define "high-temp ABS", and if they'd replace or refund it if it melted. I'll update the thread if/when I hear back from them.

    Re: Under the hood insulation?

Sorry. LMC also sells what I posted. I found it as a result from lmctruck.com when searching Google. I guess I just assumed you had seen them also.

Summit sells a universal kit that includes material that looks much closer to oem-type material on GM cars and trucks. I'll see if I can find it again.

    This is it:

Metro Moulded Hood Insulation HI3 - Free Shipping on Orders Over $99 at Summit Racing

That's not what you have already, is it?

I believe Dynamat? also offers a product in 1/4" and 1/2" thickness. A synthetic foam. I'm not sure it's what you're looking for, though. This seems like it's more audio-based, still.

Nah, I didn't see Quiet Ride liner anywhere on LMC when searching from their home page... It's funny, I never have a problem finding anything on Rock Auto. LMC, I feel like they OCR scanned their paper catalog and said "meh, good enough!" and then threw in all the misc stuff at the bottoms of pages.

The one you posted from summit looks like a nicer version of the same thing I got from LMC. If I didn't already send mine back, I'd take a pic of it under the hood to really show how bad it looked. I'd rather keep a scuffed up dirty stock liner than replace it with some clunky inch thick "blanket".

All I was looking for was a new oem liner, but those are NLA... The one below was made out of aircraft firewall material, and were available for our trucks, but the guy making them passed away.

I'll see what Quiet Ride has to say about the ABS plastic, and go from there. Dynaliner would be a last resort just cause I'm not fond of their branding all over it.

I dunno... I googled my ass off and couldn't find a new stocker anywhere.

I already checked my local GMC dealer and after the guy told me he's never heard of a typhoon and am I sure it's a GMC?, I had him look it up for a Jimmy, and he said they didn't have any and couldn't get them anymore. Then I went to the chevy dealer, and after the guy was done scoffing at why I would want to put a new hood liner on a 25 year old truck, he said they were discontinued and no one in their chain has one. I really do love the parts guys at these dealerships hahaha... It doesn't matter the dealer, they all act annoyed that you're there asking them to do their job.
