  • RADwood Car Show In LA 12/2/2018

A buddy of mine was telling me about this car show, called RADwood. It's basically a car show that gives recognition to all the cool cars from the 80's and 90's that people either don't care about, didn't know about, or forgot about. But you'll still see stuff like DeLoreans, Testarossas, IROCs too... But then you'll come across something like an 88 Chrysler Town and Country Turbo (I dunno if that really exists, but you'll see oddball shit like that there).

A bunch of people show up in full 80's and 90's garb too, so dig out those white hightops and your Winger shirt, and let's represent some SyTy! haha. It's a lil steep on the entry fee ($30), they must have raised it, cause my friend said it was only $20 last year... it's also in the LA arts district, so queue a bunch of hipsters who only like the cars because it's ironic. Should be a good time either way... here's the link. https://www.radwood.co/

It's funny that there has to be a car show dedicated to 80's and 90's cars now, when in the 80's and 90's you'd go to a car show and see 25+ year old cars, and it was just a "car show".

Nice! Hopefully we can get at least a few trucks to show up. Considering the amount of exposure this show is getting now, I think it'd be great to show up and get a lil positive recognition for these trucks and maybe even stir up a lil demand. Too many beat up or rusted out trucks selling online for under 10k, and just dragging down the value of the good trucks.

Although after yesterday's episode, I'm under the gun to get mine driveable again... Got my alignment done, and then my ignition cylinder locked up, so I couldn't start the truck and had to have it towed home. I dunno if the tech at the alignment place eff'd it up or what... and my power brake booster is shot. I swear, you fix one problem and you get 2 more.

Well Crap! Truck started doing the stumble and die at idle thing within the last couple weeks. Gonna throw plug wires, plugs and an O2 sensor at it. The show is a bit far from my home in the high desert to be running into driveability problems. They'll probably mysteriously go away after the show is over.

Well there were only 3 of us total (my black 92, a red/gray 92, and a syclone) but we were spread out so no group pic... I didn't camp out in a lawn chair in front of my truck to play evangelist. But I did hang around my truck for a little bit just to hear what people were saying. My favorite remark was something like "oh there's a typhoon! These are super rare... There was a pickup truck version of this that was turbocharged, and THOSE hauled ass! But they had some problem with the motor or transmission blowing up so discontinued them and just threw all the body kits on the Jimmy and called it a "Typhoon"... but these aren't anywhere near as fast as the pickup truck though" hahahaha. After I heard that, and a couple "these have the same motor as the grand national", I had to go over and pop the hood to help sort some people out. Even then, I still heard "oh this one isn't a twin turbo, the Syclone we saw upstairs, that's the twin turbo version... they're worth a lot more than these" haha.

Overall, it was a lot more fun than I thought it would be... Got to talk to quite a few people much smarter than me, called "former owners", and there were some pretty "rad" cars there... one guy brought out a Vector W-8 which harkened back to my youth, and I think won best in show (obviously)... and like I mentioned in my original post there were some cars there like a 1988 Daihatsu Charade that still had the window sticker and literally looked like it rolled off the showroom floor... lots of Supras, and GN's, couple ZR1's, and a lot of other "headscratcher" cars that make you wonder why in the hell would anyone hang on to this, and how is it still in immaculate condition? I learned that Toyota made a supercharged Previa... why? I don't know... but there was one there in unreasonably good condition. I also forgot how many cars in the 80's and 90's had interiors that matched the paint color, and just had unnecessary features like power headrests???

The question was also raised... "where do ferraris go to die?". You never see an old 355 or 430 with like 100k miles on it... what happens to those cars? They aren't necessarily iconic or collectable like the Testarossa or the 308... err well maybe you'd keep the 355, as I THINK that was the last year they came with a manual trans... but still... where do those cars end up? I didn't find much on google.

My Typhoon failed on the way down, between Mojave and Lancaster on HWY 14. I still went to the show though. I was bummed, but happy to see SyTys there! I chatted with the owner of the Syclone. He had just gotten it back together the day before with passing smog. It belonged to his grandfather and is now his. Cool deal being a family owned truck. The show was just as much about the audience as the cars! Truly a great time.
