stock Sy vs. stockish 03 Cobra

I finally got around to driving the Syclone like it wants to be driven. The results were... predictable. My best friend has a 03/04 Cobra (the fast ones) with exhaust and a pulley. It makes 437hp at the wheels. Sy 0895 is stock performance wise.

Race 1- I got a jump on him and put on about two car lengths. I had the windows down and its a weird sensation to hear the other car racing over yours. All I could hear was blower whine, screeching tires, and rowing gears. He caught me at about 55mph and never looked back. Damn those cars are fast. They sound incredible.

Race 2- He got a great jump on me. I pulled about a half truck and then he drove around me after 30mph. We shut it down early since he had a few lengths at 70mph.

Race 3- I didn't get too big a jump but he spun a little. He caught me around 60mph and promptly missed 3rd gear. By the time he sorted his shifter out, we were still pretty close at 90mph. The Sy was running out of steam and his Cobra was just getting warmed up.

If your keeping score, thats Sy 0 Cobra 3. The third race could be a toss-up, but I'd give it to him. If you ever come up against a 03/04 Cobra, be warned. My swiss cheese brain remembers it runs 12.7 or so. Like most of our syty's the Cobras get modified more often than not. Some supercharger porting and a tune will get these cars over 500rwhp. My buddy is saving up for a twin turbo kit that should be good for 700+.

This was the first opportunity I had to try a boost launch. We kinda knew how the races would play out, so he let me build boost every time. I found out my brakes start slipping at 0psi, so I guess I didn't actually boost launch. Regardless, these trucks pull pretty good in first gear!

Yea, those Cobras are pretty mean. Don't forget though, there are some quick stock turbo Sys out there if you know what your doing. Browse and talk to some of these guys. For some reason high 11s rings a bell on stock turbo, or maybe it was very low 12s. Either way, that will be plenty of enough to beat a 03/04 cobra with slight mods. Nice races.

define slight mods? sticky tire , cold air intake, and hypertech mid 12 sec car with a good driver great driver low 12s if they say "light mods" dont bother

They really need weight "light-ening" mods. Those Cobra weigh like 3800lbs right?

Right....on a prepped track.

You could have held him off much longer if you could have boost launched on him.

Taking off @ 0 PSI is pretty weak. Just my two cents.:2cents:

Agreed. I've added the issue to my fix list once the weather warms. Probably looking at a complete brake kit from vendors here. Work will be picking up soon so it may get put off 'til summer. Once I get the launch issue sorted out, I'll start hunting. A few people have found out there's a Syclone around and all the sudden I feel like a marked man. I've been invited to a car club meeting. They've got a 9 second Tiburon, a 640hp WRX, a bunch of Vettes, a Blackjack Mustang, and some other fast stuff. I'm trying to avoid little man's syndrome. If I lose too many races I'll go crazy and tear into a perfect running truck.:rotf:

I think I posted in here several months back about my street runs against my buddy's '03 Cobra. He had a pulley, exhaust and tune (450whp or so at the time, IIRC).

We raced a couple of times on a cold night and four more times on a mild day. I was launching at whatever boost I could build and hold before the light changed (ranged from a couple psi to 6 or 7 psi).

I killed him to 50 or 60mph each time and held him off past 80mph twice. One of those was because of a missed shift and resulted in a Grey Hound or greater lead before I let off around 80mph.

Don?t get me wrong. On a track, he would kill me after 60 feet. He?s run an 11.60 at Heartland Park with his current tune (a little more boost, knocking on 500whp). He simply cannot get the car to hook on the street in the first two gears. With that said, it?s a trip having someone blow by you when you are doing 70+ and they are still fishtailing and fighting for traction.

I can vouch for the ?not being able to hear my truck over a screeching Terminator blower?. I had my cutout open for each race. Once he got enough traction to get to my tailgate, all I could hear is that damn blower as he shot by me. At that point, the whine was drowned out by his hellaciously loud exhaust.

I highly recommend racing Terminators with the windows up. That blower whine is God-awful loud.

Yeah but they sound sick! Hearing the blower whine come up on you and then the mean ass exhaust note they belt out is quite awesome to hear.

Ah yes, the only reason I sold #0895...hard to tear apart a great running truck, even harder to stay stock though.

every one of them up here has the same mod, solid rear axle swap, and Mickey et streets 10 inches wide, they will have with a sy from light to light if there even a remotely good driver

Few times at the track I've been up against some of the comp rod guys. (Very cool bunch BTW.) It's a kick hearing those guys go screamin' by. Lot of fun racing yur friend.

Those Terminators are definately mean. A buddy of mine had one with the normal mods putting down almost 500 at the tires. One ride in that is what got me hooked on forced induction. That led to the addition of a super charger on my V8 Ranger. I had the Ranger running the same 1/8 th mile times as that Terminator. Then I decided to get into the Typhoon thinking a stock vehicle should be much more reliable.

X2. work on the brakes and launching. Next time give him a 5psi launch and watch him shit his panties as you put about 7 cars on him till 60. He still will slaughter you up top but you can surprise people sometimes.:turbo:
