MSD Billet distributor not fitting my oil pump shaft and collar

I had a new MSD Billet distributor that came with a Typhoon I bought. Went to use it on my new Syclone engine. Won't go down into the oilpump all the way. Using a new pump with shaft and sleeve from RPM. Emailed but never heard back. So I put the stock distributor on for now. Its # 8367. Anyone else run into this issue.

I'll be putting my MSD billet in this weekend... I'll let you know if I run into any issues. You're not using the o-rings, correct?

I think it's just hitting the oil pump drive. I had the same problem with my stock dist and a Melling pump and shaft. Ya just gotta fool with it and be patient. Try cranking it just a bit with the starter. Worked for me.

Keep us posted.

The instructions say not to use synthetic oil during the break-in period on the dizzy gear... does anyone have any input on that? What did you use Don?

Maybe tomorrow I will see if I can drop it in again. Or Monday. Going to the Supercross tomorrow afternoon and plan on riding all day Sunday.

Just looking at the bottom of it, the cross pin is a lot larger than the stock distributors. I need to pull the stocker back out and reprime the oil system anyway. Want to fire the new engine for the first time here soon as I finish the DP.

I'm running Shell Rotella 15w40 with ZddPlus for break-in. Changed the filter after 50 miles but haven't cut it yet. Oil consumption is nil, a good sign. Dist gears need to be matched with the cam. Different gear depending on billet or cast cam.

run a composite gear, you will never have to worry about it that way. ever.

Howards makes a gear that they say runs with anything. I assume it's composite as well.

I never knew they made such a thing... I see Comp Cams has one.... pretty spendy - $100. I usually like going with the best on things but I wonder if this is overkill on a basically stock motor, since people have been running metal gears for decades now. I wonder if the composite gears were really made for high rpm usage??

Re: MSD Billet distributor not fitting my oil pump shaft and collar

I had a composite gear after i got tired of replacing bronze gears on the v6 (i was doing a lot of street driving). I spent $140 for my composite gear from Comp (so they have come down some) and it was worth every penny.

I did a power tour (3k + miles in a week) and thousands of street miles and when i pulled the motor and sold everything that composite gear looked like i just took it out of the box.

Oh and I had the 4l80e computer set to shift at 6800 :) so they can take the rpm

I swapped mine out for the composite drive gear. No need to worry about it anymore.

Thanks guys... looks like I'll be delaying my MSD install and will get the gear ordered today.... I assume it's just the one for the SBC.

It's not the RPM. I'm no engineer but I think it's the miss match of metals. There is quite a bit of load on the gear to drive the oil pump. I've seen a miss-matched gear, very badly worn.
