tune up problems....

OK. THIS MORNING I DID A TOP END CLEAN, CHANGED PITA PLUGS. CAP AND ROTOR. OIL CHANGE AND FILTER. TRANS FLUSH.

WHERE IS THE PCV VALVE???

I EXPECTED THIS BRICK TO BE RUNNING LIKE A BAT OUTTA HELL. NO WAY! SHIFTS ARE SOFT. WHEN THE BOOST COMES IN, IT DOESNT FEEL LIKE 15LBS OF FURY.

I KNOW THAT THE VALVE COVERS ARE LEAKING. IS THIS WHERE MY PSI/POWER IS ESCAPING?? HOW MUCH OF THIS CRAP DO I HAVE TO REMOVE TO GET TO VALVE COVERS?

IS THERE SOMETHING THAT I'M MISSING? TRANS ALSO HAD SH!TLOAD OF SHAVINGS. IS THAT THE TQ CONVERTOR? IM GONNA DO A TRANS FLUID EXCHANGE W/ A MACHINE TO MAKE SURE THE PASSAGES ARE CLEAR ON MONDAY.

CAN SOMEONE GIVE ME A DIFINITIVE ANSWER? OR DO I NEED TO LISTEN TO WIFEY AND SELL IT??

Re: tune up problems....

There are actually 2 PCV valves, one for boost and one for vacuum. They are both located on the passenger side valve cover - under the intercooler tank. they are kind of a pain but can be changed without removing anything. You will need AC Delco PCV valves, they are 799C with an E stamped in the bottom of them. Do not use anything other than these, as for your tune up: what plugs, wires, and cap and rotor button hace you used. You may also want to change your vacuum lines with one of the silicone kits Adam/ SYO237 sales here. I would also go with a quality 160* thermostat, and a K and N air cleaner. Maybe others will chime in with some advice. Good luck in your quest.:tup:

Re: tune up problems....

Oh, and what about changing the fuel filter, may want to check and see how much fuel pressure you are getting also.

Re: tune up problems....

First thing: Capslock off, it implies you are yelling/shouting.

Second: As mentioned, which plugs did you use? Also a good cap/rotor is a must along with good wires.

Third: If you are getting significant pressure out of the PCV system, then you have blowby, and bigger problems to worry about. Leaking valve covers won't cause a power loss, they'll just make a mess.

Fourth: Make sure your TV cable is properly adjusted

Fifth: Metal shavings in the trans pan are bad. If its that metallic grey sludge on the magnet, I wouldn't be too worried, but actual metal/clutch fragments are a very bad thing. Time for a trans and converter.

Sixth: Is the truck actually making full boost? Do you have a good aftermarket gauge to verify? Stocker is for decoration only.

Re: tune up problems....

Thanks for the input everyone. I have a AutoMeter boost and pyrometer on the pillar. I'm gonna change the pcv's and fuel filter on Sunday.

What's the preferred size of vac hose to use? Does anyone have a vac diagram they can post or send me?

When I set the cable, I depressed the button and pulled the cable to the driver side fender. I then took the throttle lever and rotated it all the way counter clockwise. I will tripple check the trans fluid level also.
Its got a KnN on the pass fender. I'm gonna recharge it.

Re: tune up problems....

Order a set from Adam, they will save you a lot of headache. They are precut, high quality silicone lines that should last for many years. Hell the factory ones were not this nice, some guys have bought silicone hose by the foot at parts stores only to have it colapse after one or two drives. Go to powertuneplus.com, this is one of the most informative sites you will find about these trucks.

Re: tune up problems....

I read in your mods list you have an aftermarket down pipe. I am wondering if it is 3", with stock turbo. I have read that a bigger down pipe with stock turbo can cause problems.

HOW MUCH OF THIS CRAP DO I HAVE TO REMOVE TO GET TO VALVE COVERS?
I was wondering about this myself as both of my valve covers are leaking from the rear. I know on the driver's side I will need to remove the hard coolant line to the upper CAC and the TV cable. To remove the passenger's side valve cover, I will need to drain and remove the upper CAC. I can't remember what else is in the way.

Re: tune up problems....

Valve covers look like they are gonna be a pita.

I looked for Adam, silicon hose guy, in the for sale section. Cant find him. What company is he with? Might as well get some parts coming so I can sweat polish the engine bay.

I was also told that I have a ATR 62mm turbo on there, not a stock shell. The downpipe is also supposed to be ATR. Not sure of the injectors though. Or fuel pump. Trying to get a hold of the builder to confirm all the guts of the brick.

Here's a link to Adam's Group Purchase: http://www.syty.net/forums/showthread.php?t=64787
One thought that might help, while waiting for someone to tell you what the truck has in it, is maybe take some pics of the engine bay. Post them up here, or ask someone to host them, if you don't have a photobucket account or something similar. Then people can poke around, so to speak, and maybe offer clues that way.

Re: tune up problems....

thanks for posting the pix. I took a tape to it and came up with 7" across and 7" down. No identifying marks like my Precision on my Type T.

Any educated guesses?

Anyone out there have a known ATR they can post a pic of to compare?

Re: tune up problems....

How is boost being controlled? It appears that your boost solenoid is bypassed/not connected.

Before you do much driving, especially WOT, you need to get the truck connected to a scan tool like datamaster and make sure it is not knocking. These trucks cannot tolerated ANY knock, and even a completely stock truck can blow up if it's knocking at all. You can also watch your IAT's as that's pretty important as well.

You should also get a FP gauge on it and see what the baseline FP is and confirm that it rises with boost. If you don't know what fuel pump is in it, I would just replace it with a Walbro 255 from a vendor on here (not a eBay special, they are Chinese knock-offs and will fail very fast) and consider it a preventative maintenance item. The stock pump is maxed out from the factory. And try to confirm what injectors are in it, if you don't know.

What spark plugs did you use and what did you set the gap at? And definitely get Adam's vacuum line kit, it is awesome and well, well worth it. It comes with the diagram, instructions and it is pre-cut, partially assembled and labeled as to what goes where.

No problem, just promise to post pics of you stretching the hoses across your floor! Or do you get the girls involved?
