Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just bought a Typhoon and im having some running issues with it that are starting to stump me. I have a eratic idle that i thought might be a timing, vacuum leak, fuel issue. But it dosent seem to be it. It runs better if i disconect the timing wire under the dash(black and tan wire). But not well enought to get on it. With the ignition wire hooked up it ran well but with the intercooler and turbo hoses of the truck once i hooked it all together ran like poop and barely ran. Tried different chips no good also. The idle surging and hunting just seems like its something im overlooking and i could use some help, thanks guys.

Re: Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

this makes no sense, as the intercooler and turbo hose wont make any difference in driveability. gonna idle, and cruise the same. just lack power. If you have a crack in your intercooler and water is dumping into the intake manifold via the intercooler then it will run like crap!

As for the timing, you need to check your balancer and make sure the timing mark is in fact 0 deg. With the tan wire disconnected it should be 0 deg (and that typically makes a truck run like crap and be really sluggish)

Depending on your state of mods you may want to locate a stock chip, with a new 2 bar map sensor and go from there. Personally i would do a leak down to check the motor vitals, then the timing mark, and go from there. But if you dont have a Datamaster setup, buy one and or locate someone who is willing to help. The $200 will saves you hundreds in parts and wasted time.

Re: Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

lol i agree it dosent make sense because i checked the timing and its at zero with the wire disconnected.I thought it might of been the ign. module but nope. I put a stock chip in it and poop. I just got the truck so i have to go over everything. Ill go over it again and redo the timing. What does the datamaster hook up to the obd port? Is it like a tech tool that the dealership would use?

Thanks Donny

Re: Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yeh to the aldl port under the steering column. The Datamaster reads the same data as a regular scanner or tech2, however the user itnerface and datalogging/graphing, etc makes it much easier to decifer the data. Its all there in front of you instead of having to scroll through the pages frame by frame like with a regular scanner.

Re: Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Got u thank you. I guess the guy before me was going to put a air to air intercooler on the truck cause half the stock stuff like the heat exchanger and lines going to the intercooler are missing, so the problem is that there has been to many hands on the truck. Im going to have to rip it all apart and start putting it back together correctly. Even if i had the datamaster im sure the basic of basics couldnt hurt to make sure its running right. I appreciate the info.

Thanks Donny

Re: Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What do the spark plugs look like.. what are they telling you? lean/rich? Fouled?

Got to have some good candles in there or at least know if it's going to light somthing off.

Did it ever drive decent or was it always bad?

Re: Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I live in Long Island NY. The plugs are clean, the truck stalls when the tan wire is connected when i put it in gear also surges real bad and barely wants to idle. If i disconnect the tan wire the truck will run, but like but ruff. Sorry guys not trying to steer u wrong either its a basket case. Shame to cause the truck is in mint shape just to many people finger F*%KING it.

Re: Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All the basics you mentioned in your first post are good starting points and making sure 0 degrees is just that and the balancer outer ring hasn't slipped. One thing I had was my distributor going bad. the centre magnet (reluctor?) had cracked and caused surging, but I also had belching black smoke as well. I fitted a new billet MSD unit and new plugs and it seemed to cure it. also worth remaking all the engine bay grounds as well, these are known culprits for poor running.

Re: Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

have you tried doing a really good vac leak test? Like the bicycle tube test,or anything like that? The lower intake is known for leaks. you prob tried those, but im just trying to help.

Re: Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Head gasket on the 4 and 6 cylinders was the problem. Just took it all apart and im trying to locate gaskets for this thing. Any ideas what i should be using? Usually i use Felpro or Cometic but looks like none of the local shops carry or can get anything for the typhoon.

Thanks Donny

Re: Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Use the stock victor reinz gaskets. They will work fine. I would not recommend cometics unless you have freshly machined the block and heads for them. We have both in stock if you need to have them shipped.

Re: Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the victors are just a standard size (i dont believe they offer special bore sizes) but they work with .030 overbore.

Re: Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Since the overbore is slight, there is enough clearance with the stock gaskets. Hey Mike do u no the thickness of the factory gasket verse the Victors?
