4l80e Rebuild...

Syclone Rob

Its all ABOOT the SYTY eh
I am thinking over this winter of attempting to learn and rebuild a 4l80e. Since I have the conversion kit from GB (along with the x-fer case input shaft and GB planetary gears, which I gotta install into the xfer case)... it would be nice to attempt to learn something rather then just pay someone. I know that paying someone would be simpler but I would like to really attempt at this and feel even better if it actually comes to life. I know that transmission building is not easy but is there any good references I can use to help me along the way. I know about the ATSG book but what else can I use to help me along the way? Or am I crazy????

Thanks:tup:

The 4l80e is one of the easiest IMO trans to tear apart, all the clutch packs come out as subassemblies.

You will want some way to compress pistons to remove rings, change lip seals, but otherwise take your time. I know a member on the board has a list of some good info, hopefully he posts up a link.

I say go for it!!

I just rebuilt my 4l80e and it was not anywhere near as hard as I thought it would be.

I would sugest getting a good universal spring compressor(I think I got mine form summit)
a good lip seal install tool, and this book its worth its weight in gold!!

Re: 4l80e Rebuild...

ok, thanks for all the advice. I will be ordering the book and the ATSG book... and start looking into locating some tools to do the job. I also gotta start locating a core... Now what should I look for in a core???

Re: 4l80e Rebuild...

2001 and up. 4x4 if you are happy to cut the shaft tp the right length otherwise the 2WD version and install RPM or GBs output shaft.

You're rebuilding it so shouldn't matter about the mileage. Get the casing blasted and coated while it's apart.

Looking at around $250-400 for a core based on what I have seen here.

Good luck with this - I'd love to be able to strip one down and rebuild it...

Re: 4l80e Rebuild...

I got the 32 spline input shaft for the xfer case, so I believe I just need the 4x4 output shaft on the tranny. But I will verify that once I get a chance to go over the old GB posts on this install. I will try to document it all when I do start this!!!

Re: 4l80e Rebuild...

I made a thread linking to a guy that had done a build himself. I was almost going to go down that route with my trans but thankfully it turned out the guy had done a manual valve body conversion and still put the shift solenoids into the truck.
