4.3 Motors. Interchangable?

Possibly looking at a TY with possible blow by. Havent diagnosed it. But its either valve guides or blow by. ANYWAY!

If I get a 4.3 motor out of a... Lets say... 97 blazer!? or a 89 S10. Will that block fit under the TY heads and misc. parts? Im trying to find a cheaper way to fix this motor without having to buy jasper...

Basically is a TY top end swap onto any year 4.3 block and bottom end possible?

Re: 4.3 Motors. Interchangable?

first of all. no. syty''s are lower on compression to make up for the turbo.

but. you can do a newer style 97 up engine. do some work on the heads and convert a syty lower intake and olt that up to that engine. have a 240 na hp engine and run lower boost.. this is the best way to be on a budget and have a pretty fast engine for not much money.

There are many differences in 4.3 blocks over the years, so I'm gonna say no it's not that easy. Go to "the vault" and search "holy grail" and you will get every bit of information you need. Keep in mind though that it is not 100% accurate, but will give you a pretty good idea of what will work and what won't.

I like the idea of that. The issue is. If I ended up going 97 and up. Will the SYTY intake fit on those heads? If not. Will the SYTY heads fit on that block? If not... Im shit out'a luck haha! I really see NO point in spending 2 grand on a jasper when realisticaly I can prob do the WHOLE SWAP for close to 500 bucks IF another year 4.3 block fits...

Im not loooking to swap for any sort of power gains or upgrades. Just simply want to replace the bad with the good :D HAHA

search for vortec conversion. you have to weld some holes shut in the heads drill and tap some new ones. en you have to have some welding done on your lower intake becauce the cooling passages are different. but atleast you got yourselve some better flowing heads than our crappy engines had.

Damnit... that may be a lil much...

There really is NO way to work with these trucks on a budget! HAHA!

For a budget build why could you not buy an early 90's shortblock with under 100K and put some sy/ty pistons in it????

Put some new bearings, valve job etc...and you should be good to go no????

Wouldn't run it other than stock, but should keep you under a grand!!!!

Re: 4.3 Motors. Interchangable?

I'd do the newer engine with vortec heads... convert the lower plenum or buy one done and sell your stocker. Bolt it all together and go.
That is the cheapest way for sure.

What is this current engine doing anyway? Smoke on startup? Knock? smoke all time??????

Might not need much to get working right.

Re: 4.3 Motors. Interchangable?

A couple guys have picked uo Tys cheap with apparent "blow by" and it ended up being a non-funtioning PCV system. A few got lucky and it was a cheap fix rather than needing a new motor.

Check out sytyperformance.com for the vortec lower intake.

Everybody has to learn things the hard way once or twice before they start listening to us. I was the same way, I thought I knew everything.... At least Joel is asking the right questions and doing some research before diving into a project. I wish I had done my homework before saying "I want one!!!"

Im young but I wouldnt really say a "rookie" Ive had my fair share of modded vehicles... Its a sickness I suppose! HAHA :D

Ok well I havent seen the truck yet! I may be going tomorrow to check it out! He says that sometimes the smoke comes from under the hood back from the firewall (Sounds like PCV already) and that he needs to add a qrt of oil 1once a month!

What should I look at to see if its a malfunctioning PVC system?

Re: 4.3 Motors. Interchangable?

im actually the guy who has the ty. the blow by starts about 5 min after start up or when it warms up. i was thinking about checking with the pcv setup but have no idea about these trucks so i dont know where to begin. by the way if it is the place for it there are no valves on top of the valve covers. as for the power loss, the truck is in dyer need of new plugs, i know that for a fact, and the timing is off. i know this b/c is has a rough start, smells like fuel inside and out, and has a miss when running at idle. also power loss can be because of the fact that theres no pump or cooler on the truck just the top one thus theres hot air being blown into the engine. theres no intake on it, just a piece of cloth covering the rubber tube to the turbo. and lastly the exhaust has no cat. dont even start talkin shit fellas, i got the truck this way and didnt know any better. hah

Re: 4.3 Motors. Interchangable?

do a compression check, and if it's not good do a leak down test. if everything is good start to do a good tune up.
