on the block filter

I did all the searching and found the filter I thought I needed, acdelco p47. It is about 1/4" too long, it hits the prop shaft. Is that the filter that is supposed to work or is there one that is a little shorter. Im going to go look at the parts store to see whats what. any help would be appreciated.

Re: on the block filter

no joy at the parts store, I compared mine to a wix 51040 and it is exactly the same. The filter is hitting the flange for the prop shaft. I am not sure what to do about this now that the engine is back in the truck.

Re: on the block filter

motor mounts are stock, I really only need about a 1/4 inch to get it to work. I tried denting in one of them to see if it will work but it is hanging up just a tiny bit and it wont spin. Once the damn thing gets on there it will have plenty of clearance, I just cant get it started on the nipple on the block.

I really didnt want to have to use a remote setup for 2 reasons, 1) they leak and 2) I dont have one. I have the part that mounts to the fender well and holds the filter, but the block adapter and hoses are gone since they were full of the remnants of the last engine.

Im sure its a long shot but is there a remote kit out there that will fit these for use with no cooler.

If all else fails, I have the hoses and fender-mounted adapter cluttering my garage, if you want it Matt.

I may end up having to go to that. I wonder if I loosen the driver side motor mount and jack up the engine then tighten it back again if it would clearance it enough.

Re: on the block filter

I lifted the drivers side for about an 1/8" of clearance, and did manage to get the filter I beat the shit out of to thread on, but looking at it now that its on there the other part of the flange is going to hit it. Its just not going to work for me:banghead:

Looks like I need to get a stock setup, and figure out how to put it on with the engine already in.

I wonder what is so different about mine that it wont work.

I simply used a filter meant for a 2.2L chevy engine (S10, Cavalier, etc). To put it on you have to go from the side and kinda slide it in? Hard to describe, but it doesn't simply fit by lifting the filter straight up onto the engine.

Fits without any issues at all?

I think that was is the one I have, the pf47 i had read was the short version of the pf52. 47's were on 2.2 and 52 were on 4.3's.

I will try and get a pic.

Another idea INDYTY gave me was to use this, but they are pretty proud of it, anything else like this.

Why am I confused at why you have an ON THE BLOCK filter?

Mine is up front next to the fender cover under the hood ---

Re: on the block filter

I can't understand why it doesn't fit. I simply looked in the catalog and picked out a filter for a 2.2 chevy. Granted (and I'll take heat for this) I used a fram filter, but hell, they all should have the same dimensions.

I run the PF47 and jave no issues whatsoever. It is tight getting the filter in and out, but no problems - so long as you do NOT TIGHTEN IT MORE THAN 1/8 TURN! You WILL destroy the filter trying to get it out if you overtighten it...

In some applications (mainly vans and f/s trucks) with the 4.3, the filter attaches to an adapter on the block like other smallblocks. 4wd S-series trucks have it mounted in the fender for clearance and as a convenient hookup point for an oil cooler if so equipped. 90's F/S 4x4 GM trucks with the 5.0 & 5.7 also have an adapter which moves the filter to above the front differential for clearance.

off the top of my head:

Mobil 4011 (long) and 111(short)

Mighty 3980(long) and 3387(short)

Other conversions:

Mobil:

for LS series engines & 4.6 Northstar

5288 (long) 4006(short)

Mighty

159(long) 4006(short)

From memory, the 3100, 3400, 3800, 2.2, 4.3, 5.0* & 5.7* all use the same filter family
*in 2wd trucks & vans there is a larger filter than the 3980 & 4011 (Mighty # M40A)

the 2.4**, 3.5, 3.7, 4.0*, 4.2, 4.5***, 4.6*, 4.8, 4.9***, 5.3, 6.0, & 6.2 (LS family basically) all use the same filter family
*Northstar & Aurora
** Quad-4
***Cadillac

Big-blocks are a completely different game, I haven't been under one in a long time.

The Ecotec is the odd man out, it uses an element/cartridge style filter

Re: on the block filter

When you do not use an oil cooler what do your engine temps range? How much faster does your oil break down because of the higher oil temps?

from reading on here I understand it to be a marginal difference in temps, about 4-5 degrees. And using mobil 1, oil break down is not a concern since it is designed to allow running for extended periods of time at high temperatures.

Thats how they are stock, The engine in mine was toast when I got the truck so I had a new one built. INDYTY threw out the factory lines because they were probably contaminated with metal from the old engine, and he had planned on eliminating all that anyhow. I wanted to do the same since the lines always leak, so I folllowed the info on syty to do it. I got the nipple from gm and the filter should just screw right on, but its too tight. Everything I read said this was a straight forward swap. Im not sure if it has anything to do with it being a clone or what, but literally EVERYTHING in this truck besides the body is sy or ty. The driveline is syclone, everything else is typhoon. Could the sy driveline be the culprit.

Anyhow, here is some pics of the filter and such.

This is a filter I "clearanced" compared to the unmodified one. You can see how little is needed to make it fit.

here it i from top and bottom. It looks like it will still get hit by the flange when its spinning.

here it is with no filter installed.

Re: on the block filter

I think I may end up going back to a stock setup minus the cooler, but I need to relocate the battery to the drivers side to eliminate the stock air intake crossover. It has broken pieces at the end and I dont want it break apart anymore and get sucked into the turbo. Has anyone ever moved the factory filter block to a new location. I deleted the ABS so that's not in the way, or maybe relocate under the truck on the frame rail or something.

Re: on the block filter

Cars didn't really run oil coolers until the late 80's, didn't seem to be a lot of issues before then. Anything to make a buck if you ask me. As has been said here before, I think it really boils down to the type of driving you are doing. If you are always in high RPM then maybe it would be a good idea. I think on a mildly built SYTY that is street driven, I don't really see the need.

Why not relocate the battery to the lower inside fender. There's somebody on the forumn selling or was making/selling kits.

Here's one that was for sale, not sure if it sold.

Re: on the block filter

After doing this mod, I thought about this thread and think your motor mounts might be bad or wrong. I was able to put on my filter on either side of the propshaft with ease. I did use a wix 51040 and do not have a stock propshaft if that matters.....
