When I start my truck, it idles like it should. But after it reaches operating temp. the idle starts to go up and down. It is odd, it has a rythem up down up down. It varies over 150 rpm. Has anyone had there truck do this?

Re: Crazy Idle

I am just getting it running after the rebuild. Before I did the rebuild the truck did not idle exactly right but not quite like now. I did not do the IAC reset since the rebuild. I guess I should do that first. But I didn't think of that when it started happening again with the new engine.

I dont think the manifolds are leeking since they were just installed. The IAC is new.The vacuum lines are new and also just installed.

Just dont know

Re: Crazy Idle

I'm doing Code59 on mine and it had the same problem for a while.... I originally thought that I might need to add more timing, but I ended up curing it by richening it up a bit once warm... has idled much better since.

Re: Crazy Idle

Really, what table do you adjust for that?

I'll have to look tomorrow when I'm back out in my shop... I'm pretty sure I used f29x. There is a separate table, IIRC, for cold operation.... that was fine on mine. Mine was also fine when in gear.. just out of gear was hunting a bit. The difference in map values between in gear/out of gear let me do it in f29x.

Re: Crazy Idle

Thanks Rob, I'll check that table out. I remember before this engine rebuilt my idle would smooth out when it was in gear also. I didn't check it after, but I will.

You seem to be gaining a lot of knowlege about tuning. I may ask you a few questions soon if that is ok. I can use autotune just fine. But no experience after that. And I just put in a set of 60lb injectors.

Thanks Phil... I'm learning more all the time.... there is a LOT of good info on Code59 now.... I'll help out best I can :D

Re: Crazy Idle

Do you think it is F29c (closed throttle)? f29x is the Extended vacuum.

Re: Crazy Idle

I use code59 also. f29x I will adjust it a little richer than the 14.6 at idle. Thanks

Re: Crazy Idle

Look particularly at the bottom 2 RPM ranges, in the 30-40-50 KPA areas.

What happens: When you're nearing the lean limits of your motor at idle, the RPM will slowly drop off, and KPA will increase as IAC opens. This usually gets you into a richer area in the table, which causes the RPMs to speed up (to match the opening of the IAC), so the IAC backs off. RPM returns to the original desired RPM/KPA (which is too lean), and the cycle starts over again.

Increasing timing at idle can help a motor handle leaner AFRs, and can sometimes mask this.
If you change timing, make sure you're aware that only the bottom row of the timing table gets used, no matter what your idle RPM is.

There are some other parameters related to IAC that can be changed, but it often isn't necessary. It also gets pretty complicated when you're dealing with 4-5 moving variables at the same time.

Re: Crazy Idle

Great info. I adjusted those two rpm ranges up about 2 in those KPA areas. I am off work Thurs. and Fri. so I should be able to see how this works out. Thanks guys

Re: Crazy Idle

I finally got the truck all back togather and started trying to get it running right.

I set the timing to zero with the tan wire disconnected. I have digs 60# bin from code59. I adjusted f28 first. Then I ran a couple of logs while I was just sitting in the drive. Also I manually richened up the cells used at idle, but I dont know if they are adjusted enough.

The truck still idles all over the place. Sometimes it idles good. Sometimes it dies. I may have a vacuum leak. If I do I dont know were. Everything is new.

Can someone please look at this log from tunerpro for me? I zipped the file to help with the download.

Which column should I look at for vacuum?
