I am in the market. I have always had interest in these trucks. i have spent several of the last few years buying every vehicle I ever wanted, driving them one year and changing my mind. I like the syclone alot and there is one for sale near by but then I started checking out typhoons now I'm unsure. any info is appreciated.

I bought a Ty cuz I liked cruising around with more than one of my friends in it at a time before I blew the F@$%er up.

Nice way to put it 93 tyGuy!!!! I bought a ty becasue i like the space. I have had a lot of s10 blazers and when i bought my mazda pickup i went back to the s10/ty style about a year later and got rid of the pickup. I liked them so much that i have a 93 ty and a 92 chevy s10 as a daily driver and i love them both.

Just buy one of each. The parts are fairly interchangeable so you should be able to keep at least one running.

Re: sy or ty?

don't scare me off now with breakdown concerns. I am hard on my vehicles. I actually drive a 91 toyota pickup currently, I like the truck and its my second except for one of those junk ss silverados I had a few years back. I thought it was like a good sy / SS / ty in between extended cab compromise. sy is more limited production, and slightly faster (stock) ty is less pricey ,more comfertable, and more luxurious.

Re: sy or ty?

i bought the ty b/c I wanted the room for other people and belongings. Now I hate having more than one person in the ty b/c it feels slower, and I never carry anything around with me that cant be put in the bed of a Sy securely. Im still in love w/ the Ty but in some ways I wish I had gotten a Sy. they handle better, less rattling, weigh less, faster (for the most part). the down side is that they have ugly mirrors. (which can be changed) harder to find, and more expensive. soooo...... but both or better yet 2 of each!!!. that way you can have 2 stock reliable sy/ty's and the others you can mod and flogg the piss out of em'

It is my opinion that a syty is the wrong vehicle for you. Skim through the forums here, and you'll see that they all break down quite often.

SyTys + "I am hard on my vehicles" = transmission death. At the very least a trashed propshaft.:2cents:

And thats still considered a good day! Maybe the SGT might be a better choice.

+1. I love my GT and more parts are interchangable with regualr s10 parts. Give the engine a slight build over and add on one of those new CPI superchargers and you're good to go. Unless you have Tim Allen syndrome where you always need more power. Present company included.

Re: sy or ty?

hard on my cars isn't nuetral reverse slams! I drive through the city like I'm auto crossing, I run up every gear, turn hard, blah blah blah. all my past cars have been sticks so they beg for it a little more. I have an 88 mustang right now with 400 hp and a 6 speed and I flog that pretty hard but still no hard launches etc. prop shaft is a must upgrade, and trannys are replaceable. the mustang started out with a stock tranny and then when the motor broke in I stripped the gears and swapped to the t56. the best weak link is always either tires or clutch. you need a "giving point" when you have a street car or you'll be breaking things all the time.

Your going to be finding a lot of weak points becuase AWD doesn't spin the tire that much and we don' t have a clutch. These truck have 4 major mechanical weak points, Stock Engine Internals, transmission, front propshaft, & engine mounts. When I am looking at truck these are the first things I think about. They are all upgradable, but either they are expensive or PIA to replace (motor mounts). If you drive as hard as mentioned above you are going to finding these weeak point really quick. (a stock truck flogged break these parts, a modified one even quicker) If you willing to spend the money ands inderstand what it takes, go for it. You also can't bring a SYTy to a regular mechanic, most of us do a majority of our own work.

Some poeple think they can use a SyTy as a cool AWD stock daily driver and flogged it. These people make a huge mistake. They can be driven daily but only driven sanely and with somone on top maintenance.

Re: sy or ty?

I think our stock internals are pretty tough. Its the 18psi we give it that blows them up. These trucks were made only a few years so the bugs were never worked out. IMO the trans and brakes suck the most. I used to be hard on my car. I had a 2000 SC mustang (400hp) ,a 2003 dodge ram Hemi (every bolt on possible), 2001 GTP (350hp) and a 500hp 57 belair. I was hard on those cars. I find my sy to have more then enough power and I dont jump on it too much. They do require a lot of maintenance and thing always need replacing but what vehicle that is 15 years old and can go 0-60 under 4.5 and carry a small load or 4 people. We are a select group of guys who owns these trucks. Most of my friends and family dont get it.
