Re: sy paint code.

I'll have to check on the code, but I remember it being Lamp Black and mine has no clear and really needs wet sanded.

Re: sy paint code.

I am a forman at a body shop in palo alto and just read the post. These trucks are all single stage? If so i would not paint mine single stage due to the fact that there are a lot! more imperfections in aftermarket paint in a single stage then in a two. Also you can not cut and buff ingle stage paint you will burn it. You must have a clear coat to cut and buff. If you need the truck repainted i would be willing to give you a deal and show you the kind of work we do at my shop. But if i would make one recomendation i would paint it two stage even if it did not come like that you will be much hapier. Also all the old muscle cars that look good are two stage even though they originally came single stage. The ones that are kept single stage are worth less. let me know later

Don't listen to the Lurch, haha. He don't know nothin, lol. They all came single stage as far as I know. Heck, they did a single stage on Chip Fooses' Ford truck and that thing came out great. Maybe there's a different way of going about it for a better job. But then again, I'm not a body shop.

PS. LurchGuy is an electrician, he likes to play Mr. Body Shop man on weekends.

Re: sy paint code.

I am an electrician so thats not saying much. My uncle paints show cars. The nice thing is he lives next door to me. He will paint my whole truck in a few years but for now I just need my new cowl hood painted. Hopefully that will get some of the heat out the engine bay. I will go 2 stage either gunmetal grey or black when I do repaint.

Yup, 19. However, the original single stage is tough to get/expensive. I got some DAR 9000 that ran me $90/qt with hardener.

Are you looking for repaint, or touch-up?
I got some touch-up stuff from automotivetouchup.com

Also, I found a "pretty good" match for the Sy headlight bucket paint in a spray can in the SEM line.. a graphite metallic.

Re: sy paint code.

To say you cannot cut and buff a single stage is simply not true. When done properly, there are no issues. Did my 70 Trans Am last year in a single stage urethane. With my technique and materials, I sand and buff in 24-48 hours. The car won best of show the first time out. Will be doing it again in a month or so on another car. I would NOT single stage a metallic color. That I would two stage for sure. One more thing (being a critic), on a two stage job you have more chances of a problem as you will have prob. 5 applications of material. Get a dirt nib in your second coat of color and then clear over it 3 times. Lets see you buff out that one. Could go on for days on painting but will suffice it to say, you can get a excellent job out of a single stage straight color.
Cost? As dig states, it can be expensice but paint is not what it used to be. I just bought a gallon of epoxy primer for $183.00 and need to buy the hardner. It a 5:1 mix so I need less than a quart of hardner/activator. It is only available by the gallon at $226/gallon. Ouch.
