TOW HITCH??? You can find one on the back of a 2500HD. Not on a syclone. God no.

Re: tow hitch for syclone

it has to be welded and the cladding/bumper has to have a whole cut for it if youre into that kinda thing + the towing restrictions (500lbs) makes it a bad idea.

they will actually hold more  . It's nice to tow a jet ski. Towing another car would be stupid.

Re: tow hitch for syclone

i have been looking for a hitch to tow my 800sxr for 6 months now i find a guy that is going to make me a custom one. I found it impossible to find the one made by drawtite. good luck. an theres nothing wrong with having one of your toys tow another. you probably wont even feel a jet ski behind it i dont feel it when its in the bed. i just dont like how low it ride with it in the bed.

Re: tow hitch for syclone

I am sure you could fab something up so that you could take the plate off and pop on a hitch in place of the plate temporarilly, I have see similar stuff done on S-10's. IDK if I would recommend it, but if you do, post up some pics to piss people off

Re: tow hitch for syclone

for those of you worried i am not looking to tow a 3 car trailer with monster trucks on the back. i need something to pull a small trailer that carries bounce houses. if i wanted to tow cars i would put a 5th wheel on it LOL. ill hardly use the hitch but i need it for a back up vehicle to tow lite objects and it is a high mileage syclone thats not in the best of shape so im not ruining a nice truck.

thats cute, the bed of the truck will only hold 500lbs, not that youd want to tow any more than this.

wrong!

First it will be the tow hitch, then the cladding, then the suspension, then..well the list is endless......They are addictive.

As for ruining it, they are ALL nice trucks no matter their condition. Look after it as they're getting more and more rare.

Re: tow hitch for syclone

...I must admit, my first response was to say "mount a fifth wheel"
or "above the bed gooseneck" hitch in your bed (rather than hacking the cladding)
icon_razz.gif

but, after further thinking, maybe your question has some honest merit, like:

1.Would it be useful for a SyTy Vendor to design a useful hitch (limiting the
weight factor being towed)?
2. Could a hitch be designed that had multiple functions, like bike rack, motorcycle
front wheel carrier, ski rack, etc?
3. Has any attempted to make a "cute" trailer (like the hot rodding community,
where it matches a SyTy vehicle, and could carry tires, gas, or small amount of parts)"
I guess it could "sleep" two people...like a "popup tent" if done right.

Anyways, If enough interest (and this topic seems to come up once a month)
it would seem that someone on this board could make money designing the
"right" product. Towing a snowmobile, jet ski, bicycle, or small motorcycle
shouldn`t be that bad (if you stay out of the turbo, and properly cool engine
and tranny).

Re: tow hitch for syclone

NoJimmy, I think you might be on to something. Granted, Sys aren't designed to tow on a regular basis, but it still would be nice to be able to tow a small trailer if needed.. Obviously whoever designs/builds the hitch would have to post the weight limit in large numbers/letters in an obvious spot (because people do dumb things).

Spoke with John at great lengths tonight about a hitch for a bike rack and very small stuff.

I picked up a hitch on Ebay and Scott Husner was kind enough to send me the actual Syclone mounting instructions. I will try to play with it on the next week or so.

My Sy had a Draw-Tite hitch on it when I got it... weighed about 80 lbs, so I took it off.

Nothing was cut anywhere. It mounted perfectly.

I know I saw a matching trailer a while back. It was cool... would be great for nats.
An old S-10, and some of Paul's glass cladding...

They'll tow fine, as long as people aren't stupid and think they can whiz down the road at 80 and expect things to survive.

Re: tow hitch for syclone

Ok, I am ready for the harrassing..... but I recently put a hitch on my Ty. No cutting of any cladding. I needed to tow a small trailer to bring my sons racing kart to the track, 20 miles one way. My trailer is a little big, measuring about 14ft long and wearing 225/70-15's, and it has a 4x10 bed. I was very carefull when towing, and I can see why you arent supposed to tow with these trucks.
1) They have very little load capacity. With only 200lbs of tongue weight- you can see my Ty sag. I dont have the air suspension anymore though.
2) Its VERY easy to hit boost while accelerating. I only drove 55 max, but getting there took a light foot. Whats wrong with hitting boost?- With extra towing load, you'll detonate and the engine will be bye-bye. If I hit any boost- it was only like 1-2 psi until I caught it. This is the main reason I feel that GM didnt want these trucks to tow. If GM put a hitch on them, some Yo-Yo wouldve towed his 30ft boat 80 miles to the lake, and toasted the engine (probably the tranny too)

Mine tows OK if you keep the throttle light. I already plan to get a 40"x48" trailer at Harbor Freight that only weighs 180 lbs. It has an over 800lb capacity- but the kart only weighs 165. I think the Ty will be just fine pulling 350lbs.

Re: tow hitch for syclone

...Okay, with a little planning, and realizing the differences between a Sy and a Ty
(wheel base, gas tank location, weight distribution) a hitch could be
designed for either to carry small items (bikes, motorcycle, skis, extra racing parts
popup trailer, go carts, atvs, lawnmowers, hot tubs, or port-a-potties)
icon_smile.gif
.
In other words, it comes up often on this board, and some would purchase one if available.

One must pre-think this out by (previously mentioned, but emphasizing) however,
disable or limiting boost, adding tranny and oil coolers, larger radiator, and suspension
adjustments (perhaps). Im thinking 2-wheel type vs 4-wheel trailors.

On the "other side of the equation", as in bigger is better, I sat in the following this weekend:
http://omearacustomdesigns.com/

It is called a YETI, and is a F650 4x4 pickup with a caterpillar C7 7.2L turbo Diesel,
300 hp, 860 ft/lbs torque
allison 3000 6 speed, auto tranny,
Meritor 2 speed air shift transfer case,
12000 lb meritor front axle, 17500 lb dana rear axle,
air brakes, air ride
goodyear 48" tall tires,
110 gallon tank, front and rear cameras,
17" drop down screen, JL subs and amps,
custom refrigerator.

Price starts at $65,000 and goes to $134,000 fully optioned.
Im recommending this tow vehicle to Marty...as a SoGT Hauler!
