Hey boys, anyone ever attempt to install a B&M / Hurst or other automatic shifter in our trucks froma Camaro, Vette or other? Iknow some of our shifter parts are the same as a Vette but as to the whole console mount shifter assy. I'm not sure. Any know or ever try it? Any info would be great.

Thanks!!

I think everything i've read on here says dont do it unless you like rebuilding tranny's, no idea why though.

All its doing is placing it in a desired gear. I would think you could use any automatic shifter for that job... :2cents:

Your thinking about a full manual setup. Full manual means max line pressure all the time. That tends to break parts.

So George, do youknow if one of the Hurst or B&M Camaro console shifters will work with our console? Like maybe the 89-93?

Re: After market shifters???

here is a pic of mine. sorry its kind of dark. i just used a b&m universal megashifter although any universal 4 speed shifter should work. i made a custom top plate and used the b&m gear indicator but you could easily use all the stock stuff. the hardest part would be adapting the indicator; the shifter will line up with the existing hole.

i mainly use it to shift in and out of overdrive... i like the where my tranny shifts but i didn't like the loose looks/feel of the stock crap and its a pretty inexpenvive mod ~160 bucks and i found a couple hours of free time so i decided to give it a try.

i annodized this plate black but i think i will put the natural aluminum one back in.

here is a pic of my plate and the mickey mouse chrome plated plastic crap that you will get with a b&m or hurst kit. it doesn't fit anyway, the pocket where it needs to sit isn't square. everything else in the b&m kit is pretty solid.

Nice pic's, thanks so much! That is really what I was looking for.I think I'm gonna try a Mega Stick shifter and see if that will work.

nicely done. i have the same shifter and its pretty sweet, but i no longer have the stock console. i like the way those turned out! btw, i think the comment about rebuilding trannies came up b/c you run a new tranny cable, which can be a pain if you dont have a clue (like me).

Re: After market shifters???

yea the easier thing to do is use their console or a make a custom one. my problem is that my stock console also houses 2 crossovers, an amp and the brain of my meth system.

Thats a clean ass install right there, i like that alot, did you have to cut out the area in the stock console plate, or just put that over top of it? Anyway you can make another top plate for me?? Id like to do this for my Ty as well.

ditto

That looks better than stock.
I'd do it if it were a simple swap.

Re: After market shifters???

ok first of all i took a new pic thats not so damn dark and edited my first post but here it is again:

http://www.michaelrenz.com/upload/files/bmshifter(1).jpg

you will have to hack the existing plastic (obviously). you can use tin snips if you want because it all gets covered up. you will also have to cut up the metal frame inside the console for the new shifter to clear. i used a cutoff wheel; again nobody can see it once everything is together and its clear as day what material needs to be removed.

i also had to use about 1" of spacers under this particular shifter. b&m makes a truck mega shifter that is taller I THINK and you might be able to skip this operation but i'm in no way sure about that !!!

other than that you just follow the directions and its a snap.

i do have another black anodized plate because i have learned to make multiple parts when prototyping. i can also make more if anyone is interested. plain brushed aluminum ones i can turn around in a day. same goes for spacers. if you want the plate anodized in any color it will take a week maybe two because i'm a little backed up in that department. anyone can pm me if interested.

also, if anyone has access to a waterjet or wants to try to make a plate on a mill (good luck) i have drawings available just pm me your email addy and i'll send them to you and give some other machining details that you will need.

Re: After market shifters???

the hammer will definately necessitate a different plate. not a problem.

Does the same trim plate apply?

Looks like it may be different.

how much do you want for one of the trim plates in bare alum?
