I just love my truck (NOT!)

Simple task...install new plugs/wires to replace the pieces that have been in there since the nats at chitown umteenzillion years ago  .

No big hurry in doing it since Ive had the parts laying around for months and I took my time so that I could tidy up some wiring and vacuum hoses while I was at it. Get everything done and fire it up...idles a little better...nice..lets go for a spin  . Roll into the throttle and at 12psi the truck noses over...WTF? I monkey with things to make sure I didnt muck anything up or knock something loose. Nope...scratch head...check fuel pressure...its good (scratch head somemore/cuss) so I fire up datamaster and take a look at things while doing another 35-50mph 3/4 throttle run...everything looks fine but it still falls on its face at 12psi and now Im getting 14+ degrees of KR. WTF? Back to the garage for more head scratching/cussing.

Plugs/wires are a bitch to swap and its midnight so I tackle the easiest piece first..the dist cap. I pull the new one off and go to install a new spare I thought I had on the shelf...no go since I gave the spare to a bud a while back for use on his S10. Damn.... I pull a cap off of a junk 4.3 that has 150k+ mils on it and throw it on just for the hell of it. That fixes the nosing over/breaking up at 12psi but Ive managed to pick up an extra 12-13 degrees of KR somewhere (UGH!) so I head back to the garage for more cussing/head scratching. I monkey with it for about an hour without finding anything obvious so I throw some 116 octane in the tank to see if the KR is real or immaginary....no improvement  . Sitting in the garage I whack the throttle to see if I get any KR with no load...yep, 14 deg of KR at 5500 in park. I figure I'll cut the neighbors some slack and quit for the night even though they woke me up with their weed whacker at 7am the other morning so I say the hell with it and go to bed.

I love my truck  and it obviously loves me :rotf:

Did you end up using NGKs or Delco (I remember you talking about going NGK). The only reason I ask is I had better luck with the Delco plugs from a KR standpoint.

Double check timing. Maybe the dist got moved while you were futzing with the cap. I say that because I actually found my dist loose because the fork thingy had come off the dist.

I used Delcos since I had them on the shelf. I bought 24 of em when the local chain store had them in stock when I asked on a whim. Shoulda seen the look on the guys face when I asked "how many you got?" and when he told me 24 I said "I'll take em all" .

Nahhh..my dist hold down is tight enough you couldnt turn the distributor with the pipe wrench and a 2 foot cheater bar. If you can move a dist any amount with just your hands the hold down isnt tight enough.

Guys,
Think really hard about what I wrote to begin with...."revved it up in park" which means no load on the motor. With our motors it wouldnt detonate on 20 let alone 116 octane with no load/free revving so the KR isnt actual detonation its mechanical in nature. When I swapped in the 80E I had to do some messing with the fuel lines at the bellhousing and fabbing brackets so Im thinking the fuel lines are mushed and/or vibrating against the bellhousing or floor board causing it. Previously I could run 17psi on 93 with an occassional 2 deg of KR of shifts which is ok (IMO) so Im pretty sure everything is ok ignition/fuel wise.

When I get finished replacing the leaking pinion seal in the rear diff  I'll tackle the false KR issue.

Re: I just love my truck (NOT!)

could it be that you bent one of the stock heatshields on the exhaust manifolds, while getting to the plugs?.

Ya I can imagine. I brought it up only because I was just amazed when I finally got around to actually checking my timing after I bought the truck to discover the dist was just sittin' there with the hold down loose. I couldn't believe it.

How bout it?
Re: I just love my truck (NOT!)

Did you check you chip? Mine had 18 deg. of KR in park also, my chip was about to fall out of the ECM. I reseated the chip and it went away.

Peace,

Re: I just love my truck (NOT!)

At one point I had tried to use a metal chain as an engine tie down.. It was causing the exact same problem.. It would rattle as I reved my engine and cause a full 12 degrees of knock.

Good luck chasing down the problem..
