tell me more

ok, so i did a search on the options i have on lowering my truck. i already purchased the beltech rear springs, and cranked the torsion bars down as far as they will go. definitely did a big difference compared to where it was. i was reading something about taking the torsion bars apart, and then flipping the keys upside down. that would actually allow me to drop things down a lot farther. i would like it lower, and want to weigh my options. there was only one thread about this and only one person was saying that it was a bad idea. and this was back in 2004. so. anyone have any recent input about this? good idea? bad idea? i am working on a limited spending limit. let me know what you guys think?

Re: tell me more

if i recall reading this somewhere, i believe the torsion keys are already turned upside down?

personally i don't recommend this, and here's why...

for starters handling goes to shit, you'll go through shocks faster than a set of brake pads, and the most annoying thing is your cross member will scrape on everything.

but if you like having to creep over speed bumps and piss everyone off thats behind you, or have to pull into driveways at an angle and risk getting rearended... then go for it.

But if you run into anyone whos as much of an asshole behind the wheel as i am, i'd be on the look out, cause i purposely go outta my way to cut those people off.

god knows how many times i've almost been t-boned because someone in front of me comes to a dead crawl to pull into a driveway, and im stuck in the middle of the street.

I say try it and see cause it's one of those mods that can be "undone". Don't worry about the speed bump thing too much because unless your driving an M1 or like tearing the shit out of your ride, your supposed to "slow way down" for speed bumps.

Re: tell me more

i dont want the truck to be on the ground where i have to worry about driveability things like that. but i do want to get rid of the wheel gap and get it down like maybe 1-2 inches more all the way around. anyone else heard anything about this?

Re: tell me more

just cranking down the torsion bars usually get it low enought for most people, lets see a picture of what it looks like and what you want it to look like?

Re: tell me more

well this is where it was

before

and this is it now

after

honestly to me it's not too much of a difference. that's why i was thinking about going just a little bit lower

Re: tell me more

is the truck a ty w/o cladding or a converted blazer, the reason i ask is that the ty's have different torsion bars, plus the wheel arches make ours look lower, all i did was crank down the bars a bit and then put in rear 2 inh blocks and my wheel wells are mostly filled

Re: tell me more

yeah, mines a converted jimmy. on mine the torsion bars were cranked all the way....well, there's like 3 threads left on each side. maybe trying the keys flipped may make more of a difference since mine is not a real ty.

Their is a certain point where it will be just ridding around on the bump stops. It will also start eating balljoint, because the lower ones will be binding almost all the time.

i guess ill have to bring the truck to the shop tomorrow and see how much i actually have before i hit the bump stops.

The torsion keys are different on the Sy/Ty vs. a 4wd Jimmy. There are also differences in the spring rate of the bars themselves. Check the coloured band around the bar and goto GM to see which one you have. The weak bars make lowering the Jimmy's a real mess - the fronts get really soft.
