4l80e Temps

Did some testing last night, playing with 80e trucks.

With the E trannies they have a temp probe built in, the computer can see internal temps.

Cruising in Jeremy's temp was 159ish degress. So we got to wondering what would happen during boost launch. Since I know my 700 would climb 30 degress in just seconds and push over 200 with almost identical cooler layout it was interesting comparison.

So typical Jeremy style, hold brakes hit gas. 5 seconds maybe more of holding against the trans and 20psi of boost. Launch....20psi on street still give good rush, even more when staring at laptop screens.

By time we get to my driveway ~1/4 mile away the trans temp has climbed about 8 degrees. Yep only 8 degrees to 169 max. That was probably 1 minute after the launch.

Re: 4l80e Temps

Ive seen about the same thing on my set up giving it the same abuse. Well, I cant hold 20psi but I figure the 15psi I can hold is close enough  .

On 90* days in stop n go traffic it runs about 175* without the fan thats mounted on the cooler under the bed on and when the fan comes on temps drop to mid 150s. The colder days we've been having lately I leave the fan off and temps run about 165* on the freeway and 140* in stop and go traffic.

:2cents:

Re: 4l80e Temps

Right after I installed my trans temp guage I was shock how hot my stock tranny got. I had the stock set up (no additional transcooler) I did a boost launch 0-40 realize I left the wastegate soleniod was unplug & pulled over. My temps were at 200 degree. I then did 0-60 or so boost launch. Two boost launches in a minute and I burrried my guage past 240 degree mark  The temps took 15 minutes of driving around to get down to 200 range. I short after installed a trans cooler.

trans start at ~$2500 if you get a built one, less if you win one
front shaft ~ $400 for gilbert
rear shaft = shortened at driveshaft place ~$75-100
torque convertors are like $1000 :(
Xfer Case Adapter $200
Controller ~$600-1000 depending on route you go (if you get an aftermarket)
Tranny lines $200 for braided stuff & cooler
-------------------------
$6000ish total

Of course if you already have a gilbert or other aftermarket front shaft it can be lengthened by a drive shaft shop too. For about the same $75-$100 as the rear. You can save a little there.

I'm not familure with Jeremy's setup, is he using additional tranny coolers or just using the stock one built into the radiator??

Re: 4l80e Temps

I'm jealous. My 700 doesn't seem to get as hot as some here have experienced, but it still worries me sometimes.

Re: 4l80e Temps

He has the stock radiator cooler, a remote filter, and remote cooler. Identical setup I had on my typhoon and my typhoon trans would run at 180deg, and 1 boost launch be over 200 or more. 2 boost launches and forget it.

I just have the stock trans cooler with my 4L80e at this time. Don't know what the temps are or even should be.

Re: 4l80e Temps

In the tci controller, where do you monitor the temp. i looked in my dash and the only temp i see is TOT* (c) which after a 10lb launch up to 60mph it only got to 70c

Re: 4l80e Temps

TOT=Transmission operating temp. 70 C = 158 F

When racing a 700, once you get to 215F, get out of it and let it cool off. It will take a LONG time for it to cool down.

Re: 4l80e Temps

sweet thats what i thought. well it was coooold last night when i was running around and looking at that, but i was steady 66c and after the launch and pull up to 60 or so it only crested at 70 and came back down very quickly. i am now moving my trans cooler and oil coolers under the bed, away from the intercoolers and radiator. ill be curious to see what changes...
