Painting The Typhoon. Please Help me With Suggestions

1st off let jme tell you that I am far from rich so I cant afford a few thousand dollar paint job and I dont know much about paint besides what I read in books and magazines. With that said, on with the story!

So a very close friend of mine is a painter. Very meticulous and detailed individual with everything he does. I trust him. he has a paint booth in his shop and we plan to have the Ty painted within a week if all goes well. Im going with factory Forest Green Metalic and grey cladding.

I need to buy all the materials and do the prep work and he will shoot it for me and help me buff it. I have another buddy who will put in my windows for me so I am going to pull the glass as well.

Here are the questions...
1. So what kind of paint do I buy? I know I need WA 7964 44U Forest Green Metalic but what brand?
2. How much paint?
3. What other materials should I buy?
4. What color is the factory cladding and how much do I need? Is it regular paint? Do I need some sort of flex additive?
5. What do I prep the cladding with? the manual says strip it of grease and wax before sanding it even.
6. What do I use to fill gaps and scratches in the cladding?

Thanks to anyone who knows about this stuff and can take some time to help me out!

I already have the cladding removed from 1/2 the trucka nd I started sanding. Fun fun!

I have nothing for you about what to buy. Just moral support as mine looks exactly the way yours does right now.

But......the plastic around that pass side door handle and lock. Is that factory? Mine didn't come with that on either side. I don't know if a former owner removed it or something.

those only came on 92 typhoon , there is a thread somewhere from a couple of days ago about them... not on sys or 93 ty.

here it is http://www.syty.net/forums/showthread.php?t=45636&highlight=door

Ok I found the cladding color....

Argent grey cladding color (per 1993 PPG color chip booklet) is WAEM-8798

Ok. Thanks for clearing things up on that one for me guys.

Good luck with your paint. I'm interested to see what type you use and how it turns out. Mine is still some time away from actually getting sprayed and I don't have those decisions made yet.

The only piece of advice I can give you is dont go cheap on the paint. We did with our 73 camaro and arent happy with the results. We ended up painting it 3 times and spending more money than we would have had we bought the good paint in the first place. Of course we expect perfection from our home garage though  .

I prefer the ppg base coat clear coat system. It does not orange peel so easily and doesnt get fish eyes like when using DuPont. If you want to really make it last forever, try the diamont base coat clear coat. It is awesome paint! A gallon will get it done and about a quart on the cladding. I would use PPG over any of the rest of them. I did and it works great!

I also would definitely ask whoever your painter is about a flex agent for the front and rear bumpers. I take mine to the local bumper shop and have them strip it and put it in primer. You would be surprised at all the bumpers I have seen with the paint coming off in sheets.

So I suppose I will go with PPG cause I dont want to be disappointed with the paint!

GREAT choice...go for it make us all proud you can do it yourself ussually better than someone else if you put your mind and heart in it nobody cares for your stuff like yourself....50 years old learned that years ago....good luck practice on some body panels and remember the key to it is its only as good as whats underneath it...and use a 2 part primer and lots of elbow grease blocking it with trim coat black you'll see  best of luck shuggs!

How serious is your paint job?

Are you taking the engine out and re doing the firewall / engine bay?

What bout the shell? Are you just spraying the visible exterior?

Regards rust, do you have any and if so, what are your ideas as to how to fill the holes?

How much will it cost you approximately?

Are you removing the hood to get it sprayed?

Are you removing the doors and tail gate as well?

What are you doing for your prep for the painting?

You have a sweet truck mate and soon it will be awesome!

- My paint is is not show quality serious but very nice is what im going for.
- I am spraying everything visible. Removing the side windows, windshield, drille, lights, antenna, cowl.... I can remove the hood, fenders, and tailgate... I can remove whatever...

- No rust 100% down south, warm weather Texas truck.

- Not pulling the engine. The firewall is green and will stay green.

- Cost? Whatever materials run me!

- Prep? Im sanding the paint off all upper areas down to primer or metal... filling in the little baby dings it has in 3 places and pulling off everything that i can. My buddy will put my glass back in for $25 a window. hehe

Thats what it was that we used on our camaro the first time when it was silver and black. Our first ever paint job and it turned out beautiful on the first try. This cheap stuff we used is way up there as far as how many things we've painted and it looks like ass

Hey guys thought I might chime in here because I may be able to give you some advice. I was a painter (by hobbie now)!! First off I know for a fact that all GM trucks built between 88-94 had a chemical problem with the factory paint. They had no adhesion between the base coat and primer which caused delam. This is bad. Im sure many owners between the years have seen it, but some are worse than others. That being said I hate to say It, but I'd for sure strip the whole truck down to bare steel(not much fun but just my advice). I just hate to see fresh paint jobs go to waste because of existing paint. Anyhow as for the paint, I highly recommend Dupont. I love it and have used just about everything else. Your Sealer,Base, and Clear will run you about $600. You'll need a gal. of each with reducers and activators. As for bodywork if you strip it all down and are good at bodywork you sould only use about 1/2 gal. of primer. All the other materials (paper, tape, mud, sandpaper ect..) will depend on how good you are at doing it the first time, but adds up fast. I cant stress enough to keep things clean at all time. NO SILICON (tirewet,ect..) around at all. Even if you or someone was to walk in the room your painting in with cologne on will fisheye everything!!! Practice on something first like some test panels. If you wanted pick up a book at like Barns&Noble on painting they have great books with great tips. The best thing ever to help is to just hang around someone who paints for a living, thats how I learned everything I know.. Good luck and I'll chime in later with more advice if you want it.
