4L60E Where is drive?

I'm not sure if this is common to 60E's but when i change gears, it clicks into position. Just like any other auto tranny. But if i put it into "D" it has slop. It wouldn't click and "lock" into drive. The tranny is positioned in drive, and the truck runs in drive gear. But the shifter won't click, and you can slide the shifter about a 1/4 inch back and forth and still be in gear.

Is this common?? is it a shifter problem, a tranny problem?, a cable?

Mine doesn't do that. Check your cable ends and make sure nothing is bent or hanging loose underneath. If it has always done it, then it's a characteristic of the truck(provided nothing is broken), if it just started doing it, you need to find out what happened. It's possible you've got some wear in the shifter assembly inside. Floor mounted shifters are easier to diagnose than a column mounted shifter.

Re: 4L60E Where is drive?

Update...

with the truck finally out on the road, i decided to focus back on this problem.

i went underneath, and the bracket that i bent to clear the propshaft, can be moved forwards, and back with the truck in park. I can click it forward, or click it back one click.

Also, the truck will roll, while its in park, when it rolls, i hear the tranny clicking. I had the pan off, and as far as i could see, the rod was firmly in the tooth on the yellow arm with teeth (im guessing each tooth is a gear).

but my problem is.

1.) the truck rolls when its in park

2.) there is alot of slop in the shifter when i switch gears, (reverse is pretty much the most solid gear, it will click and lock into reverse) it will also click into park, but again the truck rolls. but any of the forward gears, the shifter wont lock in, and the shifter button never comes up all the way. However, then transmission does activate (and lock into) that gear, it just wont lock the shifter into place.

alot of posts on how to adjust the TV cable, but i couldnt find any on adjusting the shifter control cable.

Re: 4L60E Where is drive?

Went underneath, and had someone shift gears. The Cable bracket on the tranny is solid, and locks in each gear. The slop is in the shifter itself, so thats a relief. All my work will be inside, and i'm not harming my tranny.

Which probably means that my park lock connection to the shifter is screwed up too.
