Spoon feed me "Code 59"

Ok.... I know this is basically set-up for those of us new to tuning and its supposed to be pretty simple. BUT.....I failed kindergarten (almost twice) so I need "extra help". Lets say I assemble everything I need to use this new code. After everything is all setup what happens next? Do I just Start the truck, run some datalogs, and then I do something with the excell spreadsheet, it tells me what is the desired settings on the maps, and I make the changes then start the whole process over until im happy?? I kind of understand the basics of what this new code is supposed to do, just not how the process works once I have everything ready to start tuning. I have been studying Jeffs writeup on "fuel tuning 101" and the writeup on the nwstp site also. I think I have read every post on code 59 thus far, but like I said I just dont understand the entire process in simple terms from start to finnish. If someone can help me that would be great. I really want to learn this :tup:

If/When I get some time, I'll try and write a procedure on how I did Mike Hardmans truck. Complete with some screenshots, and a step-by-step (click by click?) procedure on how to run an Autotune.

It's fairly easy once you get the hang of it. Being super good about file organization, and naming will help a TON. I saved each bin, each spreadsheet, and each datalog in a seperate folder under the trucks name (92ty0308-Mike.H). I also kept a text file with all of the changes that were made, the desired results, and the actual results. That also made it super easy to look back at what had changed, and where it helped/didn't help. These practices have NOTHING to do with code59, they are just generally good practices to have IMO, when doing this sort of thing.

Give me a couple of days to find some free time. I might be able to do it tomorrow night while waiting to play poker. I'll even try to make it a nice HTML file so that it can be hosted somewhere......

If I get a chance this week, I may do a screen capture (time elapsed to some degree) of me tuning code59. Depends on my schedule.

We are close to releasing this. If you could post this stuff on the 59 site that would be great. That way the Syty Chip section doesn't become a Code 59 tuning forum.

You should read up on the P4 document , sections 9-12 at least. You can view it online here . http://www.nwstp.com/ There is no reason why any of you should be waiting for 59 to be released so you can start tuning . If you cant tune your truck on the $58 code you have now , then your not going to be able to tune your truck with $59 either .

$59 isn't being produced by Fisher Price, so no one should expect it to big pretty pictures and multiple choice with one choice. It's still work and lotsa of reading and figuring stuff out. Anyone waiting on $59 to start is only doing themselves a disservice....go ahead and start with $58 and when $59 is released, you can transition easily. Treat it like WinXP versus Vista...same basic thing underneath with easier to use stuff sprinkled throughout.

Yea, I was going to catch you online in the next couple of days, and get your thoughts on the idea. I'm seeing some benfits from code59, I need to give something back. I'm not much good at the stuff you guys need (website, and code editing) so maybe this will help?

Sneek Peek time:

One of the new things that will be released is a "Simple" (aka E-Z) xdf.
It has dramatically fewer tables, constants, and flags to get in the way.

With an appropriate base bin (ie, if you have 50# injectors you start with a 50# base),
this is really all you need to dial a calibration into your particular truck.

Note that there is no scroll bar in the table section... that's all there really is.

This doesn't keep you from using the "big" xdf- you can switch between the two, if you
need to. The big xdf has all the parameters that are available in the code.

There may be a few extra items added from time to time, but for the most part it will stay

friendly names as well, so it's easier to find what you're looking for.

There is equally as dangerous of values in $59

Basically if you don't know what it does, don't change it. Make small changes when you do, and document your progress. Good tuning practices are totally independant of what you're tuning.

for newbies all of those constants/flags/tables, i felt was very overwhelming.

and i absolutely agree, good notes are probably half of the actual tuning, and im realizing that now.
i didnt take really good notes after datalogs and changes.
And now, all that past info isnt going to help me out a whole lot.
i dont know what the weather was like, i dont know what physical mods were done, etc

So i basically have to start over, itll be a clean slate with 59.
