Anyone used this General Motors IC pump?

Hi Guys,
I've been searching for a "better" IC pump, and ran across this one at ZZ Performance - it's a factory GM pump.... but they won't tell me what it's out of. I went to our local GM dealer and checked all the GM supercharged cars with the parts guy till he ran out of patience ;)

http://s137.photobucket.com/albums/q230/wyosyclone/Parts added to Sy/?action=view&current=425_4.jpg

6 GPM actual flow in unrestricted systems
Weighs 13 ounces
Draws 2 amps continuous
Removable power connector included
¾” inlet and outlet
Noise level 1
1 year warranty

It's pretty expensive, but talking with them they say it moves a lot of water and lasts forever, and is very quiet.

Any input?
Thanks, Rob

Re: Anyone used this General Motors IC pump?

Thanks for the tip! I'll give the dealership a call tomorrow and see if that's it...

I'll take some pics of the install and post them for others wanting to use the same piece.

Seeing how GM doesnt "make" anything, it would be tough to pinpoint. However, ZZ Performance only deal with certain cars. If I were to guess, I would say its out of a GTP of some sort.

Good luck! Sounds like you are looking for a needle in a hay-stack.

Thanks Merk... I had the parts guy look at all the cars I knew GM supercharged (Grand Prix, Bonneville, Cobalt)... and, you're right - it's probably made my Johnson Controls, or some other Tier 1 supplier... hmmm, maybe I'll search some of those sites. I just want to make sure it is a good pump and has the head to pump from the lower radiator position up to the IC. If it does, 6 gpm at only 2 amps draw would almost be a miracle!

Make sure it doesn't flow *TOO* much fluid. If it does, it won't sit in the I/C long enough to draw the heat out of it. Not sure what the stocker flows, but I'd stick with something proven like the Jabsco or SHURFlo.

It's most likely for the cobalt, the bonnie and GP weren't intercooled

I know that Dodge uses a similar coolant circulation pump on their heater circuits.

The 5.9 RTs have them on the pass side where our blower motor would be.
it looks identical to the jabsco.

This one looks even better imo.

Re: Anyone used this General Motors IC pump?

Thanks for the info guys!
One thought I'm playing with (since this pump draws so little current), is to get a fan (as used on aux oil coolers) and have it run all the time, just as this pump will be doing. Theory is that if this pump is flowing too much coolant it's OK as the fan will be continually dumping the heat out of the CAC, and keeping the IC cool even in stopped/slow traffic.

Does this make sense? I think I'll go ahead and set it up like this if no one sees an issue with it. I'll properly document the install and do some instructions in case anyone else would like to recreate it. I could even plumb in a water temp gauge since I'm running all new lines and fittings (just so we have some hard data).

Re: Anyone used this General Motors IC pump?

Well, I bought this pump today.... I'll go ahead and set it up, take some pics, and let you all know how it works out...

I ordered stainless braided 3/4 hose and found some nice 3/4' 90 degree elbows from GM that have nice smooth bends, so will use those where needed. I'm going to get a fan from an oil cooler setup and wire it constant hot (with ignition) so I have a steady flow of air over the CAC (I'll do this through a relay so I don't risk putting too much load on the factory pump +12v lead).

One thing I still need to find... I remember seeing some hose standoffs, that keep the hoses separated by about 3". I don't want to wire tie the hoses together as I want to keep the hot hose away from the cool hose.

Wish me luck! ....hope it wasn't an expensive experiment! :D

What is the P/N on that pump? And does it seem to work? Looks like you got it done, let us know... I could use a quieter pump... Mine's waay too loud.

Re: Anyone used this General Motors IC pump?

Sorry Sleepy, I somehow lost the two pics of the pump that I took when the batteries in my camera went down.... I do know for a fact, though, that the pump is out of the new Cobalt, and is the IC/CAC pump for that car. That big rubber donut shown in the first pic of this post is just a mounting donut - it doesn't come with the new pump. This pump is shorter, but a little larger in diameter than the stock pump. Using a longer piece of hose to connect the inlet of the pump to the CAC gets the pump sitting correctly in the mounting saddle. Since the pump is larger in diameter the stock clamp doesn't fit quite right and needs a little fiddling with to work.

This pump pumps a LOT of water - I tried it in a bucket.... probably double what the factory pump did. My ampmeter showed it pulling right at 1.9 amps with a short length of hose and went up to 2.2 amps with a 15 foot hose attached to the outlet and raised five feet off the ground at the outlet (my attempt to recreate the head it would see in the Sy). The pump is very quiet, but got a little noisier when I mounted it in the metal saddle of the stock CAC.... still much quieter than my old worn out factory pump/motor.

I ordered my pump from ZZ Performance (great service by the way), but I now know it is the same pump as on the Cobalt.... my local dealer wanted way more than what ZZ charged me for it.

Hope this helps!

Re: Anyone used this General Motors IC pump?

Hey Sleepy,
I just got back from vacation and finished up the IC upgrade project today.... works like a champ!
Just for anyone who may order the same pump from ZZPerformance, be aware that the wiring on the pump is opposite of what one would think - Red wire on pump is ground, Black wire is +12volt input. Hope this helps. This pump flows a LOT of coolant and is very quiet.
