Well if you guys are getting 19-20 that does make it seem worth it... I could live with that.

no no ...your not reading between the lines. we are getting 19-20 because of alot of time tuning and most of the guys who have posted good mileage take damn good care of their truck to keep it running at 100%.

Re: Jake is here, maybe to stay?

Heres some detail on what people are trying to tell you.

SyTys are maintanance whores. They require a shitload of time to tune and keep running at a performance level.

If you havent done your homework and know how to diagnose and fix, you will be making a huge mistake and spending alot of money. Im not talking how many trucks production, VIN decoding, and what color combos Typhoons came in.

Can you read plugs? What neat things can you do with a simple paperclip? What are the signs of a dying fuel pump? Endless diagnostics on boost control, fuel pressure, idle issues, transmission, squeaks, leaks, and the list goes on.

The trucks are pushing up in age now... even well maintained trucks need parts to be replaced. Ball joints, shocks, vac lines, gaskets, tires, brakes, idler arms, bushings, etc.

You will get more owners telling you that it IS NOT a good choice for a daily over the owner who say it is. There is a reason for that. Think long and hard about buying one of these trucks. This forum is great for support and help that goes beyond just talking to each other over the internet. Many of us have years of first hand experience and have seen it all.

Alot of people can buy a SyTy. Alot of people cant own a SyTy.

I am definately impressed with those numbers. I have my stock SY window sticker and it says 14mpg so atleast I know mine is running like it should be (its all stock anyway) ---

Re: Jake is here, maybe to stay?

I did alot of stuff mechanically on my Supra... Water pump, timing belt, tune up, oil, brakes, head gasket even... I even shimmed the wastegate!! LOL!

I know about cars and can fix them, or to say the least friends to help me. I want to learn about the Ty and stuff (being a novice mechanic), it's not like I would be a pay-mechanic type of buyer. This is a truck I would plan on having for the rest of my life or a good portion of it.

So while you guys get these types of topics alot I'm sure, this isn't one of them. I am serious about getting a Ty. This is knowing that it would probally take some work just to get it running reliably... My dream is a stock Ty. If it means replacing some parts because of ware and tare then I'm game for it. But I don't think you're getting my question and reading what I'm asking.

If it's stock and decent stock parts - then is it reliable?

(BTW I always keep an eye on my idle and pressures and shit like that. But thanks for sharing your wealth of knowledge!)

I dont understand. Recently Ive seen a lot of people on here talking about how much you should know about these trucks before they buy them. Since when do you have to be an expert mechanic specializing in sy/ty's to justify buying one?? Buy it if you want it!!! I didnt know shit about these things mechanically when I bought mine, I have had minor problems, many of which have been solved through other sy/ty owners, this board, and a great mechanic. I still dont know a lot about them but im learning, and never regret a moment owning this truck. I understand giving people a heads up about things, but quizzing them on their ability to diagnose problems is REDICULOUS!!!! :2cents:

i think what the guys here are saying is that sytys are not hondas. you cant just pick one up and it run without issues. something is going to break eventually and with rarity being an issue youre gonna either have to pay the piper or get your hands dirty and do it yourself. i agree with you - buy the ty if you want it, but like most of the replies understand it may not be a cake walk.

Re: Jake is here, maybe to stay?

I love my Ty and drive it almost every day in the spring/summer/fall and it has never left me stranded, but never ever would the only vehicle I own be a sy/ty. My main reason for that is when something breaks you have a chance to upgrade the broken parts, but that means waiting to get the proper new parts which can take weeks especially if you live where I do.

I think what he's saying is you would be better off knowing some of this stuff to start to save trouble down the road. I didn't know anything about the trucks when I got mine either... heck, just about everything I've done on cars I did first on my Ty

Re: Jake is here, maybe to stay?

Some of you missed my point. I wasnt quizing anyone, but enlightening on the everyday crap we encounter.

I along with many others have watched people buy trucks, get in over their head and end up selling them shortly after due to fustration and lack of funding. Short story... before I moved, a person about a mile down the road came to me looking for a truck. Drove my Ty, looked all over my Sy.... He was very mechanically inclined and got a sweet deal on a low mile Sy. 1 week of owning it later, he sold it due to the amount of fustration and hassle of upkeep to drive it everyday.

jjorg... you backed up my point though in utilizing this board to diagnose problems.

Im in no way telling this kid not to buy a truck.....go buy one. I was just trying to explain the reality of owning one. Its not all streetracing, cruising, and carshows.

Anyhow... best of luck in finding and buying one. There are many owners in the Chitown area, see if you can hook up with some of them. They might know the trucks already and can give you more insight, maybe go with you to look/drive them to get a second...third...forth...fifth opinion.

Re: Jake is here, maybe to stay?

I agree completely with the above post... as fun as these things are to drive I'd honestly say don't get one.. look for something a bit newer if you don't want to be nickel and dimed to death like you were with the supra.. and about the MPG thing.. I don't know what I get because I never cared. I didn't buy my sy to worry about MPG, I bought it to heart the pride of many on the street weekend after weekend in style.. plus to be different from everyone else around me.. I sold a mint 87 gn and a supercharged 90 mustang to obtain my syclone and to pay it off rather quickly knowing i'd be getting worse mpg and possibly more head aches then I would with the two previous cars.. and i was right :)

Your answer: No.

I am sure you will post and say something additional, justifying your desire to purchase to yourself, but really this is the correct answer no matter how you look at it.

You could've left it at no, my lil sister does crap like that. I didn't ask what you thought I was going to do, nor have I even been a smartass to you... I'm merely asking a question. Get off muh back?

This guy^^^^
They're reliable if its kept stock. I drove mine for a DD until I sold it to buy something newer because I'm having a kid. I had a 1992 Silverado before the TY and it broke down more then the TY did. The only thing that ever gave me a problem on my old TY was the infamous "purple wire"/starter. Basically just keep it stock and don't beat on it, only an occasional boost launch and you should be fine. It was the funnest DD I've ever had and got lots of looks  I'm going to have another one someday...hopefully soon

Re: Jake is here, maybe to stay?

I went though exactly what I said above myself. I said it because I went through this whole charade before I bought and said "f*ck it" and bought it anyway. It took a lot of work to get the truck running right, and maintaining it is a pain.

If you want it to run RIGHT at all times, you will be doing tuneups every 5000-8000 miles, which includes cap and rotor, plugs, plug wires, general tune, and other miscellaneous bits and bobs. They aren't expensive things, but they are nickel and dime items that you mentioned you didn't want to deal with from your previous mention of your Supra and they consume your time. If this doesn't bother you, go for it...

How old is your little sister?

LMFAO...but seriously I didnt know what I was getting into when I bought mine. I have more $$$ in upgrades than I do in the truck .... yeah ; but many things were just done to "prevent" having to do it in the future. "well this is off, so I might as well upgrade THIS"..... ---

She's all yours! But I say that knowing she wouldn't settle for a sr. member like you! Good luck with that though!

Re: Jake is here, maybe to stay?

I bought my Typhoon when I was 19 years old. It was my only vehicle. Take it from me... DO NOT buy one unless you meet the following criteria:

1) You have another car to drive
2) You have at least 15 friends that would drop what they're doing at the drop a dime for you to give you rides
3) You actually escaped from your Mother's womb by using a 3/8" impact gun and a tie-rod spreader. You were the ultimate mechanic from birth.
4) You're independently wealthy

If you do not meet any of these requirements, RUN. These trucks are finicky as f00k. When they do run, it'll put a sh*t-eating grin on your face so big you could swallow a toaster. On the days that they don't run, you'll wish you had that toaster to plug in and throw it into your bathtub with you in it.\

It's Love/Hate ALL the time with these things.

Good luck!
