tuning off a knock light

I know a wideband O2 is probably the best way to go for tuning. Is it expectable to tune mostly off a knock light? That’s the main thing right, just ruling out all knock?

not a stupid question,...it is possible, but not very accurate.

a wideband is always the best way, but a visible knock light is definately a good place to start.

Re: tuning off a knock light

I used knock retard numbers on my scan tool as a primary tuning tool for a long time. I'd make a fuel adjustment, and see if it knocked. Once I got it knocking a tad I'd richen it up just enough to get rid of the knock. Bad part about doing it that way with our trucks is that stock, they are so prone to knocking. It becomes hard to distinguish between knock that was a result of bad gas, hot MATs, bad ignition parts from a knock that is the result of a true lean condition.

ive got a wideband we can hook up later this summer....

I should be getting a DM cable in the mail soon. It will be nice to see what is really going on with this thing. What do you want for the DM software? If you want you can mail it to me.

the problem with only a light is you dont know if an occational blink is 5 or 8 deg of spark retard..; get a scan tool and do what darron recommends.. would be your safest and most effective tuning method.
