Farewell to Phantom Wipes

I've had the classic phantom wiper activation problem since I can remember. Ian came by last week and helped me install the fix - A new wiper switch.

For those of you who have suffered enough humiliation due to turn signal / wiper schizophrenia, be aware that GM makes several variants of this part to accommodate options like tilt wheel, cruise control, intermittent wiper controls, etc. The part that worked for me was AC Delco D6329C, $53.48 from Advance Auto Parts, pictured below. On the one hand, it would be nice to get it fixed. On the other, it is a great turn signal indicator, much easier than seeing that small flashing green arrow in the dash....

lol, I love the phantom wipers. It cracks me up. Sometimes when I hit a bump I get them. passengers are like what the hell was that.

Half the time I'm lucky if my wipers even come on. They work when the want to.
No problem with turn signals though, no apearant connection between the two.

I did the 'how-to'. Having migrated my personal web stuff twice in a year, I am not keepng up with everything. I'll look into getting it back online, but if someone wants to host it, I'll FTP it or whatever.

I sould also mention that 1 week after replacing that switch, my phantom wipes were back. Supposedly there is a specific replacement switch that incorporates a resistor to solve the problem permanently. Rather than replace the switch again, I just installed the resistor externally, between the wiper motor wiring connector and ground (on the firewall). Never a phantom wipe since.

What kind of resistor? And the value.
My TS/Wiper lever was loose and sloppy, so I changed the lever and Wala, it solved the problem, for exactly 1 month. Problem is back now.

Not to burst your bubble, But that may not take care of it in the long run. Been there,done that. It lasted 3 months, I ended up finding a bad ground connection on mine.

Well, I hope I have better luck than some of you. I also replaced the turn / wiper lever and the turn signal switch at the same time - maybe the combo will have a more lasting affect. I'd read about the resistor problem (I believe GM put out a technical service bulletin on the problem for several models during the same period). I believe (hope) the new AC Delco switches were modded with the resistor, though. For those of you whose fix didn't last - did you use a Delco replacement or a knock-off?

Delco replacment and like you, I also replaced the turn / wiper lever and the turn signal switch at the same time.

My switch was a chain-autopart-store special.
My external fix was actually a 10k resistor and a 2.2 uF cap in parallel, to sheet-metal ground. Unfortunately I do not have the information with me as to which wire I installed it on. Have to check and post up this weekend.

I am having problems with my wipers not shutting off when I start my Typhoon. Could anyone offer suggestions?? Where is the ground for the wiper motor etc?? My only way to turn them off is by removing the fuse... I did have the dash out and replaced the harness could I have distrupted something?? Any help please! thanks!

Mine are only when I use the turn signals. :roll: Go figure.

To add to this, Sy229 bought a Typhoon several months back that had the same issue. We replaced the wiper switch on that one too and neither have had an issue since.
