Truck won't move, TC or Tranny?

Hey guys,

Here is the timeline, couple days ago started hearing a transmission whine, nothing to serious, truck rode fine.

This morning, shifted truck into drive, nothign happened then I felt resistance and some noise. Gave it a quick check and continued driving, nothing wrong shifted through the gears fine no problems.

After work, when to shift in R and nothing... the only way i got it in was to rev the motor a little. Got in to R.. okay... shift into drive, same problem, gave it some gas, shifted and okay, Drove fine

Wanted to go to a friends house... shifted in to D fine... and while driving in 1st gear it was very rough with decent vibrations and some noise, however gears 2, 3, and OD are fine.

Decided to turn around, gave captain morgan a call, he suggested to top off the ATF. the truck while idling shifted through the gears fine and the fluid level was good. Went to take it for a test drive, shifted into R fine and rolled back 2 feet to a sudden stop. Now nothing works, I can hear the transmission shifting into the gears fine but the engine just revs. Could this be a TC problem or did i really mess something up. I was suffering from early TC lockup for a while now, could a couple months of early TC lockups fry my TC? Now the truck won't move from its spot, the engine just revs and whatever noise there was before is now gone, so I'm wondering that if the TC was the source of the noise then i just broke whatever was wrong. Thanks guys any ideas?

Sounds like a tired tranny sent metal throughout the trans/converter assembly and eventually killed something.

ugh....

you + luck = 0

:(

I hope it is just the TC, at least we can probably get one of those for free or dirt cheap, I have a 2700 stall here Id give you, but It came off one of my fried trannies so I wouldnt trust it.

I guess that's me showing my ignorance again...

BTW, do you want these 6" rods and pistons?

i wouldnt say ignorance, it is a SyTy and you could be 100% correct, however if it is a trans problem, Im personally going to be extremely pissed off and I think Eric is going to cry.

as these the non-syty rods/pistons? shoot me a PM when you get the time, Im heading to bed in a few.

Re: Truck won't move, TC or Tranny?

:( sigh...

i really don't have any luck with my typhoon, right now the truck won't move and luckly its in its parking spot in front of my house, i'm glad i didn't have to be towed home from somewhere, that would've been some $$

I don't even know where to start now, i guess maybe take out the TC and see what it looks like, i won't get to that until saturday tho, if it is the tranny i'll have no choice but to sell the thing as a project, I don't have enough of an income to afford the truck payment, the new motor, and a new possible transmission. its really sad i love the truck otherwise...

worst part is i haven't beat on it since i blew my motor a long time ago, i'm still on relaxed engine break in driving mode, i don't see how i could blow something up by doing casual driving. I guess the truck just hates me...

It def sounds like the converter to me.. Was the converter replaced when the new tranny was installed or was the old one re-used?

x10 on converter. It took the trans out with it when it went. Trans will just need a teardown, cleanup and reassemble with new gaskets unless you feel lucky.

he's gonna have to feel lucky, cause none of that is happening.

the converter was a new GM unit. The previous owner to me just had the trans rebuild before he let his butthead mechanic friend "fix" the engine.

Since I had a spare trans that was already built for my truck and I knew what was in it, I swapped it out and kept the converter. I believe Dave G. in Mass has the trans now.

anyway, it looks like the trans will just have to get a really good flush if we can find a replacement converter cheap so Eric doesnt have to sell his truck.

Re: Truck won't move, TC or Tranny?

well i'll give the tc a shot, if its anything to do with the trans i can't afford it, so the truck will be on the selling block...

My guess is you will be just fine doing that.. I've had torque converts fail on 3 different occasions/vehicles and each time I have replaced the converter, flushed the tranny and cooler, and replaced the filter and been just fine. However if you ever ask a tranny guy they will tell you that the tranny needs to be torn apart..

Good luck !!

Re: Truck won't move, TC or Tranny?

UPDATE:

I spent all week busting my ass, i took everything out up to the trans, put in the TC that i got from dennis, busted my ass and got it all back together, did a new trans filter, new gasket, all new fluid, and i found out that I actually fixed the TC..

Bad news, I also found out that when the TC blew it took out the trans, The truck moved fine from its spot then did a nasty rumble in the bottom end of frst gear. It was similar to the symptoms I had earlier. I seriously have no luck and as of right now no intention on pursuing fixing the trans. I dont know what to do. If anybody wants a 92 typhoon with a blown trans, let me know. Thanks

Eric

Go to the boneyard and get a trans and take it easy on it. I wish I lived closer, I'd help you out.

I've done nothing but take it easy on this truck, I never boost launched, i never raced, I just merely drove it around. I dont know what kind of driving will require me not breaking anything. If I actually beat on it I can't imagine what hell i'd bring on it. Just from daily driving, I've blown an engine, tc, tranny, so far..... I just don't get it, i destroyed a tranny, a motor with a fresh top end. I'm just purely out of luck when it comes to sy/ty

dont blame yourself for the trans dude, GM's wonderful replacement converter simply wasnt up to par and it took out the trans. Unfortunately when things are interconnected like that, when one goes so does the other. It sucks cause the trans was new thats all :(

I know but with buying the truck and rebuilding the motor, it left me in a tough spot. I just want to get out of it and stop bumming rides to work at this point :(
