Rode in the back of a police car today

I was heading to work in my Ty today, when it just died. I pulled over to the edge of the road and tried to start it,no dice.It was acting like it had no fuel, but it was showing pressure and the gas gauge read 1/4 of a tank,so I'm like WTF.

About 30 seconds later a police car pulls up behind me (I am blocking half the lane) and turns on his lights. I throw my 40 oz into the back and grab a stick of gum. I explain to him that it seems to be out of fuel,so he offers to take me to a gas station. Cool.

So I get into the back of his car and ride up to the store.See about 10 ppl I work with there :rotf: So he lets me out of the back of the car and all these guys are looking at me,probably wondering what the **** I did to be in a cop car. I go in,buy a gas can and fill it up.

So we get back to the Ty.I put the gas in it and try to start it.

Crank crank crank.

Fuel pressure gauge shows 20 psi. Hmmm. Fuel pump?

I ask the cop to call a tow truck,he does and says it will be here in about 20 minutes,so I start trouble shooting. Jumper the fuel pump and it is working.Okay I got fuel. Distributor maybe?

Nope, tach jumps when I crank it.

So of course the next thing I check is the ECM-B fuse, and it is blown. Pull out the radio fuse, put it in the ecm slot, she fires right up.

Whew!

Thank the cop, cancel the tow and head to work. My buzz is completely ruined.

So I guess the moral of this story is always check the ECM-B fuse first when you have a no start problem. And don't drink & drive. :D

why bother with a fuse at all.. why not just jumper it.. or run the truck in aldl mode, that'll get it to run..

edit: this message is sarcastic, incase you can't tell.

I had that happen going up the mountain (and rolling backwards down a mountain to a pull off spot is not fun), though no ride in a cop car. But, some nice folks did pick us up in 90ish model Bravada. Mine cost me a new fuel HVpump and tow bill, and then a call to Hood.......why won't this thing start. Then feeling like an ediot with it only being the fuse.

Damn that would suck.

Some of the Walbro pumps seem to like a little extra allowed amperage. I usually shove a 15A in all the Walbro equipped trucks I work on.

Also, dying pumps will pull additional amperage. Going up in fuse size will buy you time, but you could be looking at a new FP in the future.

Am I the only one who found this hilarious? :rotf:

Actually, I think in this case. I had already made a trip over the another mountain (two towns two mountains to cross) to watch my sons football game. I was running late so the trip was very fast, so I pushed the Ty a little hard. Front tires squawling pulling out of the turns, turbo spooling, brakes smelling WOW it was a blast. The second trip when it broke I was just cruising with my girlfriend. But, in months past I had replaced the OEM pump with a Auto Zone one, it either was junk or it got to hot causing the fuse to blow. Anyway I'm glad I have a Walbro now, I love that buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

So... what caused the fuse to blow?

Maybe he sloshed some of his 40 and shorted out the fuse?!

it is, but its illegal and very much looked down upon, it kills way to many innocent people each year.
