steering column - woe?

When a friend took then engine out, he thinks the steering column might be be busted, in particular the steering lock. It was fine before he removed the engine.

With the engine out, I can steer the wheels manually without the keys in the ignition. The wheel takes some force to get it to move past the click, but if it turn the wheel fast, it is not a problem but it makes a clicking noise.

Is it fubar? (what exactly is it that is fubar?) What do I need to do to fix it? Or when the engine goes back in and all is reassembled will that correct the fault?

thanks,

Mak

Re: steering column - woe?

engine shouldnt have anything to do with it, if you take your steering wheel off you can see a metal plate with notches in it and a metal stop the sticks out in the notch to stop the wheel from moving, I would just look at that and see if anything is damaged.

what damage could have been done in the removal or is this normal?

If I get the RPM steering shaft will that replace the lock part of the column?

engine removal shouldnt of done anything, new steering shaft wont change anything either, this is in the column itself take your steering wheel off and take a look, I cant really remember but I think that the igntion switch or some other mechanism whenever you turn key to off position might trigger the stop to lock the wheel I havent looked at in a while, maybe someone else can chime in.

Bent linkage between transmission and column. It moved the locking mechanism.

Re: steering column - woe?

so is that a major problem or can I just bend it back when I find it? Is a replacement linkage a better option?
