Priming the intercooler pump?

I know that it is hard to get the air out of the system but is there a good way to prime the system? Does it hurt the pump to be dry at first?

I just installed a Shurflo pump and redid the lines with heater hose and ran them through the passenger fender.

I just do not want to burn the pump up. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

thanks

Re: Priming the intercooler pump?

I did the same, i ended up having to remove one of the lines to the upper intercooler to let the air out, i also found a small funnel that fit tight in the fill opening and would fill it slightly above the intercooler and let the pump run, to get the air out, (mine is hotwired) it took awhile but it worked, also leaving it sit over night with the cap off helps get the air out, hope this helps

Re: Priming the intercooler pump?

yeah I just hotwired mine as well. I figured to just fill it up with the drain open on the intercooler until I saw coolant then shut it and finish filling. I will try and take a hose off to relive the air pressure in the system.

Does it hurt the pump to start it at first with out any coolant? Any other suggestion would be good. I like options.

thanks

unbolt the cooler box, hold it up, and turn the pump on. with the cap off, the air will rise through the lines and out the cap.

Wow! The first time I read it, I thought it said a Shurflo and redid the hoses with water hose, lmao

Re: Priming the intercooler pump?

Thanks, yeah I though about it when putting it together and then found the syty archives which had a thing or two to show. It confirmed how to put it together also I was going to use a garden hose but my truck is white not green so I went with heater hose... J/k

thanks
for the help

Re: Priming the intercooler pump?

Be very aware of the routing of your lines.

The lower port on the upper ic is fed by gravity as you fill the system.
Thus the lower port of the ic should feed directly into the feed inlet of the pump THEN into your CCHE and Aux (if applicable).

Routing them this way I ahve never had a problem purging the system.
I fill theupper until it stops gurlging.
Turn ont eh pump for 30 seconds...
refill.
repeat
repeat

drive it until its warm, check the ic level, top off and its good.

every truck i have worked on that had IC flow problems when purging did not have the IC lines routed properly.

Funny this is how I did it. It worked great only one leak (just needed a hose clamp tightened) but yeah and after hot wiring the i/c pump on the truck finally goes like it should.

thanks for the help guys

Re: Priming the intercooler pump?

Dont mean to vear off topic but i am going to run a kb cold air kit ( i have just havent put it on) and if i re route my hoses like it does in the archieves they run by the air cleaner

since the kb works in the same area do you think i should do something diffrent??? either in the air intake or hose routing???

you could still do that but maybe put some heat shield over the hoses in the area.
