Sy/Ty insurance

Just spoke with an insurance agent in Rhode Island. He is licensed in RI, CT, MA, FL and Nevada. He has many connections elsewhere. He is familiar with our trucks and can insure them with a classic car type policy. The coverage is very good and the rates can't be beat by your "regular" policy. The truck needs to be garaged and you need to have a different vehicle for a daily driver and have proof of insurance for your daily driver. As with all policies, there is no coverage for when the vehicle is being used in any type of competition (drag strip or road course). What are you guys paying now and do you have any interest in obtaining a quote from this guy? I am sure he could provide me with a mathematical formula for pricing (ie; $13/thousand of vehicle value) when pushed. I don't know if the company ends up being Haggerty or some other (we had other more pressing business) simply because I did not ask. If there is interest, I will get the needed info and pass it on and then you guys can call direct to the agent. I will not be a middle man looking to get anything out of this. Of course, as a licensed appraiser, if I make it to Homecomming and anyone wants a Stated Value Appraisal, I would be happy to make those arrangements.

Re: Sy/Ty insurance

Even though you didn't list my state. If you happen to talk to him about ask about options for owners under the 25/26 age getting policies like this. I know my chances are slim to none but it worth a shot. Thanks

Re: Sy/Ty insurance

More info,

With most companies the min. age is 25. There are exceptions to the rule. It is worth the call to see if they will write your policy if under 25 yrs old.

I obtained a quote just to ball park the pricing. 91 Sy, driven 3K miles or less/year, driver 44 yrs old (being 25 yrs old did not make a difference in my example), 100/300K liability, uninsured motorist coverage, no deductibles $15K agreed value. 1 year premium ='s $301.00

There are options like 1K or less miles, 6K or less miles, different liability rates, diff property damage rates, trip interuption (like if you wanted to go on the power tour-they would not include the trip mileage to your yearly calculation) or if you wanted to drive it to work frequently, they might bump the rate by $75 and others I am sure.

Check your coverage rates and compare. This might be a deal.

Lastly, I found a guy that writes in an additional 32 states. Post to this thread and I will gauge the interest and get contact info out to everyone.

I have owned the truck now for 3 years and haven't found a company yet that will write something for someone "underage"

I have grundy for 389.00 a year with 25 thousand agreed value with unlimited mileage. Of course when i say unlimited you can only drive to shows or for a cruise but you cant leave it alone. You need to be with it at all times. I had to take about 20 pictures of the truck from all the angles they wanted. The first time they called me they said ok but we will agree to 20 thousand for the value. I told them NO i want it for 25. To be honest i was just doing what my friend said to do. I was more then happy for 20 grand coverage. He told me to fight with them to see what the best they can do and it paid off.

Also another thing is that i have more on liablilty. I think it was 300/500 something like that but i remember it was more then 100/300.

I thought it was pretty good. Going on the second year already.

I live in Mass and have a daily driver other than my Sy. I drive less than 5k a year and would be very interested in this coverage. I am currently paying close to 1K per year and would love to save some moolah! Let me know!

Re: Sy/Ty insurance

Man what a strikeout for me today. I call your guy and he told me there was nothing he could do for me. He gave me some references to call elsewhere. Things got even better though. The guy told me that most places that write up these specialty policies will cancel them if they find you driving the car to work, the store etc. basically told me only to the gas station or to car shows. Then he reminded me that racing or gross displays of power/ misuse will get me dropped.
So then I call the next place down the line. Same thing, no dice since I was 22 and also wouldn't cover something I wanted to drive to work on nice days even with a gated lot where I work.
The final place I talked to was willing to give me an elevated rate since I was under their age but then told me they couldn't do it once they found out the truck would be making it to the track, even on the back of a trailer and even if it was for a car show.

I tried to explain that I own this truck, have for 3 years. I have also owned since new an 01 s10 that is procharged and have a spotless record. The tickets I have received were always in my daily drivers for something stupid and aren't even on my record. Guess I will just have to keep rolling the dice till I am 25

Re: Sy/Ty insurance

I feel for you man. Well in less than 3 years it will all change. Funny thing is right now you wish you were older and when you get older you will wish you were younger.

Some things to note. Any of these specialty companies make their book of business based on low risk. Low risk means a low claim volume and that is how they are able to lower the premium. They all have slightly different rules about how they determine their risk. None of them want the insured vehicle to be driven daily or used on a regular basis for things like going to work. Their exposure is too high. If you drive it to work a couple of times a month that would prob. be ok. If you took the 3K or 6K option for mileage, they are expecting it to be driven more than from your home to the local car show. How many shows would you need to go to to rack up 3 or 6 k miles?

If anyone speaks to an agent, get real specific on how they determine their risk. Taking it to a Major League baseball double header would leave the vehicle in a lot for many hours - unattended and the risk of theft is greater than if it were taken to a local show and you were always within a short distance. Telling you to never leave it unattended is a bit unreasonable (although I am that anal with my TT Supra).

Nobody's policy - including your regular policy on your daily driver offers collision or liability when a vehicle is used for competition purposes. A boost launch to kill a Vette, Lightning or most other vehicles while out on the road is not going to get you dropped unless you get caught by the cops and get a nasty ticket (ie; racing). Again, they think they are insuring a mature adult that drives their vehicle with the upmost respect. What they don't know won't hurt them. It's not like they are out on your local streets watching the way you drive but they will check your driving record to see if your too much of a risk.

Although they are there to protect us, their main concern is protecting themselves. That can be said for any insurance company. Everybody may not be in the catagory to obtain a policy of this type but it does not hurt to ask and for those that fit the profile, there is a chance to save a few bucks. My only goal with this post was to try and help the community members. Hopefully some will benefit.

Re: Sy/Ty insurance

For guys in Canada check out the "Silver Wheels" policy - I'm not sure if it's available in the States or not. They have replacement value, no depreciation policies for classics/collectables. I have it on my T/A and it only costs me $100 a year based on a $4500 appraisal. When I was reading up on it I remember thinking that sy/ty's would qualify for one of the programs - I think for the collectable policy the vehicle had to be 15 years or older to qualify.

Re: Sy/Ty insurance

I applied for grundy on my sy today. I had Elite Collector car before but they dropped me because they never checked my driving history prior to binding me and found something they didnt like. Hagerty said they would cover me for something like just under 500$ a year even with 2 prior accidents that were no at fault. i have quotes from 4 others, ranging from 182- 344, 345, 400$ not sure what um gonna do Hagerty is one of the largest. i pay about close to 700$ a year now for it regular insurance on my policy with 3 other vehicles and thats just liability. i might go for it, that way if it gets totalled ever and its not my fault i get a fair amount.

I'm 28 and AAA is pretty similar for my Sy. The price drops when I turned 23 and 25 helped a lot.

Did you do the online quote or actually call them? Most SyTy's are rejected online, but if call them, they will typically write the coverage. But, remember be nice about it and always forget to say it may goto the track sometimes...

Re: Sy/Ty insurance

I looked into collector insurance companies and got quotes. It was too limited on when and where you can drive it. I pay $550 yearly through regular insurance and have it listed as pleasure so I can still drive it, but it's a secondary vehicle. I have a DD that I drive to work etc, but at least if I want to drive the SY to work I can.

Re: Sy/Ty insurance

what ever company you go with make sure your agent knows what kind of truck the sy/ty's are.I had a standard full coverage policy with Progressive and when my typhoon was rear ended and totaled my agent had no idea what kind of truck it was, had never heard of them and refused to accept that it was more than just a jimmy. anyway after a few months of fighting with them I had to get a lawyer and then another month whit him fighting with them I finally got my money. still not what I wanted but more than a jimmy

Re: Sy/Ty insurance

For those that are interested in obtaining a quote, call Peter Sacchetti at the Sacchetti Agency. He is quite familiar with our trucks and can provide a quote quite quickly. Really nice guy too. His agency sponsers summertime car shows at the Mohegan Sun Casino here in CT. Quite a large gathering. Peter writes policies in CT, MA, RI, FL & Nevada.

I spoke with another gentleman Mike Smith at NorthEast Classic Cars (800) 866-6440. He is in CT but writes in a majority of the other states that Peter does not cover. Mike is also familiar with our trucks.

Between these two guys, a majority of us should be able to obtain "proper" insurance for our trucks. As mentioned, I was quoted $301 for a full year with a $15K value.

I think this will only be an issue with Tys. My title says Syclone right on it so there can be no arguement as to what it is. I believe Ty titles say Jimmy and not Typhoon.
