optima battery was sizzling in the Battery Box...

Yea I went up to FT Collins to work a basketball game and I thought I would blow the cob webs out of the Typhoon and I notice a funny smell.Got back to Aurora and something was weird the smell was worse. when I shut off the car. I checked the battery box in the back and peeuuu. The new optima was sizzling in the battery box and there was some clear liquid leaking from it. I thought these battery's were dry cell.
I'm pretty sure that the alternator was over charging since i was averaging around 85 MPH peaking 115 or so.
The car runs wicked I couldn't help me self. I was watching the radar... the radar also tells the voltage and it was 13.7 but i wasn't starring at it when I accelerated. I watch the AFR and Boost and then try to watch the road.........
I recently put the batt in a box till ten i had no trouble but it was located in the back so i dont think it is the diameter of the cable but What do I know.

Any body ever see this with there car?? I looked on some other forums and seems mostly related to overcharging..

Re: optima battery was sizzling in the Battery Box...

Optima is a "gel" cell not a dry cell.

The Odyssey is a true dry cell.

but it does sound like you boiled it out to me.
have the alt checked off the truck.
most autozones can bench test them for you for free.

The odyssey battery seems much smaller, efficient and probably easier to mount in the front even with the air to air coming through the fender..... not a fan over big batterys.

Re: optima battery was sizzling in the Battery Box...

Could be shitty new battery. I had an optima go south within a week or so before. Seems like every optima I've bought has gone prematurely. Not sure if I'll buy another optima based on my history with them.

Re: optima battery was sizzling in the Battery Box...

Optimas have a nasty history of premature failure. Of the 200+ we've sold this past year, I bet 25% came back within 6-8 months.

Dan I've got the Odyssey mounted up front. I removed the stock battery try dropped it right down below the headlight fits like a champ:D. Small, light weight and way out of the way. I'll show it to you this weekend!!

Ill never buy another Optima as long as I live. I had one that seemed to be good and of course that one was stolen  Every single one I had since then to replace it I have had to exchange or just give up on it.

+1 for the run from Optima. I've heard way too many stories.

Re: optima battery was sizzling in the Battery Box...

Yea took it home the Volts were sky high...
Auto Zone wouldn't give me a new battery unless they charged it for 8 hours and then turned up bad.
It was bad of course I had to clean up all the fluid in the bat box.
Brandon Looking forward to seeing the odyssey in front!!
I'm just about to put my s^% back up front...

Optima is a "gel" cell not a dry cell.

Actually, the Optima batteries are an "AGM" (Absorbed Glass Mat) type design; different from a "Gel Cell" design. AGM batteries do contain electrolyte but it's absorbed in a fiberglass wrap so it doesn't slosh around like a conventional Lead Acid type battery.

Gel type batteries are filled with a Gelatin solution and have to be charged at a very low rate, usually around 1 amp. They are no good for automotive applications since the charging rate can easily exceed that.

At least in my experience, Optima's are funny to charge when they are low.
