Exclamation trying to start .... please could someone help?

Please could someone give me some ideas as to what it going on with my truck?

Yesterday I filled the tank and flushed all the fuel lines with new 97 octane stuff mixed in with 10l of older petrol that had been sitting for about 1 year. It was all stored in the correct gas cans and seemed good.

I tried to start the truck all day yesterday and all day today and am really nowhere nearer getting it running.

My setup is:

stock block .030 over
vortecs
50# injectors from RPM
415 cam
stock crank

I set the timing with a gun and verified TDC on #1 using the exhaust valves opening and closing in the correct sequence. TDC also ties in with the second timing mark on the balancer that I have - new but same as old one.

My Dad and I also verified the firing order and TDC using a rod in the cylinders and waiting for the pistons to come up - all pointing to TDC being in the correct place, the cam having 0 timing and the balance marks being correct.

So far so good.

The distributor was way off but with the inductive coil pickup timing gun we checked that the #1 was firing on TDC. I checked all other cylinders and they were firing as well. Note this was all done using a series timing lamp before I got a newer one.

All plugs are gapped at .032 (TR6s)

I have some heavy duty battery cable after the battery relocate and ran that to the starter then directly to the alt. Purple wire is in good condition. I have a battery booster and a 780A battery. Cranking is not a problem.

Fuel pump is a brand new Walbro 255 (from 2 years ago, been waiting to get to work on the truck so I am pretty sure it isn't one of the cheap copies)

Fuel pressure gauge indicated 42 psi - it's misbehaving at the moment and is a bit intermittent - very annoying. I have anew AFPR. Again, been sitting for a while but doesn't seem to be a problem.

Oil pressure rises on ignition.

I tried using PROMinator and a BIN from sytyguy as well as pluggin in my old ECM and stock bin (expecting it to run rich but at least start. Both appear to work ok but have yet to make an impact

Tan wire is disconnected.

I have adjusted the dis a couple of degrees either side to no avail. I tried 180 degrees out on the dis but that had no effect.

firing order: 1,6,5,4,3,2

With the ECM in and my foot to the floor, the truck pops and bangs and hisses like it is trying to go but it really struggles.

tried the ECM A and B fuse resets, shuffling the dis eaither side of TDC etc...no improvement.

What should I do next? I am so close to this thing running. Please could someone help me out. If there was a number for me to call that would be great. Another member on the board has been awesome but we are stuck for ideas.

Anyone got any?

Thanks in advance.

Mark

if your referring to the cylinder numbering order then, if your sitting in the truck the cylinders are in this order. 1 being next to the alternator, 2 next to a/c compressor

RADIATOR.

I saw that - thanks.

Going to try the following:

advance/retard plugs by one post
swap the 2 Bar MAP back in for the stock ECM
try the ECMs with TPRT
extra GND on the ECM
check spark on plugs

Re: trying to start .... please could someone help?

you might need somone there to slowly advance/ retard the dis. as your cranking to get it to fire up. It can be really touchy sometimes getting it to fire.

Re: trying to start .... please could someone help?

yeah I know it is going to be a pain in the ass

My Dad has been helping me all day but he has work tomorrow so I am on my own again. This is the last week I can really work on my truck before I start work so I am very motivated to find a way.

I'll report back in about an hour I hope,....

Don't go swapping plug wires around.

When the motor is at TDC remove the distributor cap.
Where is the rotor pointing? Can you take a pic of the rotor orientation & post it?

Re: trying to start .... please could someone help?

OK,

I checked all the plugs with them resting on the throttle body and I turned the lights off - they are sparking very nicely so no problems there. I even zapped myself when my brother forgot to turn off the ign like I asked him

The ECM is feeding Datamaster a load of values so the ECM seems fine.

I retarded the wires one post but that did even less. There was some bubbling and popping then it stopped again when I retarded it all.

The 2 Bar MAP is in there now so I am going to stick with the stock ECM to get it running then move onto the other ECM/Prominator setup at a later stage.

Is it possible the fuel injectors are on the wrong side? I'll go downstairs now and take some pics of the fuel injectors, cap off and wires.

It's a bit of a mess as I've had everything off more times than I can count today.

I thought my fuel rail was bust yesterday but turned out to just be a duff washer.

Constant 42psi when I turn the ign on.

It has got to be something simple - some fuel is getting burned, some is not.

The injectors are brand new - they were from RPM and are 50#s. I was concerned they might stick after not being used for so long but I think that only applies to injectors in cars? Is this a possibility?

Back in 5 after pics are taken then I'll watch the vid.

Thanks guys - it's almost there. I might even make a vid of me trying to start it if that would help? Lemme know?

Re: trying to start .... please could someone help?

The injector harness is pretty easy to figure out. The connector that goes to the main harness should be pointing towards the passenger side without it being connected to the main harness.
Also the injector connectors themselves are segregated as to match the injector grouping on the intake manifold.

Re: trying to start .... please could someone help?

the screwed up injector o-ring

Taken from the front of the truck:

under the cap

where the balancer was when the rotor was pointing up above....

Pass side fuel injectors:

Dvr side from above:

I honestly think the timing is set correctly so I am wondering what else the issue could be?

Spark = ok
Timing = ok

I am thinking something is up with the injectors but I'm not sure what it could be? Any suggestions?

I could take off the rail and bypass the fuel pump and just see if all the injectors fire properly? Is there another way of doing this?

What else am I missing?

spray some carb clean or gas down the intake/throttle body and see if it runs a bit off that for fuel. timing looks good if its on compression stroke

Something looks wonky (tech term for wrong) with the pass side injector layout.
It looks like the injector wire on the top is in the wrong location.

Get the color codes from each of the injector connectors for 2, 4 & 6 & we'll compare notes.
