From what I've seen they are the same. I haven't taken one off and compared it though.

Re: Alternator recommendation

^^ I agree you just have to enlarge the opening of the hole. Very easy to do

Re: Alternator recommendation

What do you do with the metal bracket that bolts to the rear of the stocker? Does it still fit? Or do you cut it off? If you cut it off, how many 10's of thousands of miles have you run it to assure harmonics don't fracture the remaining aluminum bracket?

I'd like to do this mod, but I'm concerned about bracket durability without the rear metal bracket. I've driven WhiteTy 21,000 miles in the past 9 months. That's probably more miles than all other SyTy's on here combined over the same period. Durability is important to me. A busted bracket can't be fixed on the side of the Interstate.

Any comments? Other than don't drive my Ty so much?

I didnt run a bracket , odd part is i just loaned a bracket to another michigan guy whos bracket snapped with stock alternator, Id say 4k miles with alternator on, I had planned to make a support bracket for the alternator but never did

Re: Alternator recommendation

I didnt use the alternator from the caprice the tabs are in different locations, I used one from a tahoe IIRC

I went and took some pics of the tahoe alternator, I was looking for a brace (like the water pump to ac bracket) in the junk yard but will probably end up making one if I stay with this alternator

I dont have a motor here with manifold to measure on, but I can bolt the bracket to a motor and get more pics if needed. I think some 3/8 rod and 20 minutes with a welder could make a very strong and stable bracket to support the rear

theres another write up on the swap it mentions a different bracket that appears to Join the 2 mounting spots together

somebodys pictures showing better installed photos with same brackets as ours

Re: Alternator recommendation

I used the 144 from a tohoe as well and one of those mounting points on the bracket is cut off of mine since im using an adjust turn buckle type do completely do away with the ac bracket so I can't speak for strength but mine's been fine on the truck for years the way it is

I'll a pic or two of mine but you'll have to look close to see the adjustable turn buckle... and I forgot that i also have a torque strap on that same bracket.

Re: Alternator recommendation

Last summer I did a AD244 Alternator upgrade, 250Amp unit. Works great! The hole on the left side needs to be opened up. I used a larger bolt and nut behind it. I also had to wire in a new plug for the new style alt.

The AD244 is generally a better unit than the CS144, and is used in common gm LS truck motors.

Re: Alternator recommendation

The cs-144 I think will be just right for me... And I can get one brand new for like $100 so I can't complain and the plug doesn't have to be rewired. But thanks for the heads up ... B-)

What ever it takes!!
Re: Alternator recommendation

Damn all I did was have my stock unit rebuit into an 140 amp...EZ as pie.
Im also running the small 15lbs battery with an under drive pulley and electric fans.

I did the Tahoe CS144 unit. Voltage was borderline when I got the Sy. Had an Efan with the stock alternator. After I installed the XFI it broke the camels back. Was getting as low as 12.5 volts on long drives with the lights on.

After swapping to CS144, rock solid high 14s. Really a no brainer if you've got an Efan. Only negative thing I've heard is that it may not fit with some valve covers.
