Anyone ever hypermiled a Sy/Ty?

I've been getting bored with my daily commute, so I've started hypermiling just to change it up a bit. I don't do everything that some of those nut jobs do (I'm not starting/stopping the engine at red lights, for example). I'm just taking it easy on the gas, obeying the speed limit, drafting, coasting down hills, etc. I'm getting 18-19 mpg in my TBSS, where I normally get 14-15. Has anyone done this in a SyTy? I'd expect about the same results...

I have been pushing my typhoon around for the last year, does that count?

I don't think 18-19 can be considered hypermiling. maybe deem it almostworthwhilemiling? Anytime I can get 20 in my avalanche I consider it an accomplishment, at least it only needs low test.

You should tape off your seams and work on airflow/wind resistance

When you say the same results do you mean the percentage of improvement on the mileage? I would think you could do a fair amount better in a SyTy because they are generally smaller and lighter. I won't dive in to gearing differences since I don't know the numbers and I am too lazy to look them up. I thought I did better as a base line in my TY when it was on the road, driving conservatively.

This is a good question for DaveP. He has a couple miles under his belt in a SyTy.

I never hypermiled in the conventional sense, but I did do some extensive tire pressure and chip tuning back in the day to determine impact on MPG. The biggest help was the EGR mod that I outlined years ago.....using EGR code in the chip to force more timing and pull fuel when cruising without tampering with the main VE table(s).

Got my truck up to 24.6 on a tank once, but consistently averaged 21-22 mpg (keep in mind that I live in farm country, so traffic is a non-issue). This was back when I had a 20G, stock injectors, and stock engine (and I drove it like a minivan). Never saw that level of economy when I went to L35s, cam, 50#ers, and 60-1 turbo (best was 21mpg after that IIRC).

I get great gas mileage out of the Typhoon! By leaving it in the garage and driving my other vehicle.

My Truck left me stranded once and I had it towed home on top of a flatbed tow truck. We got home and the gas tank had the same amount of gas in it as it did when the truck was picked up from the side of the road. That was the best mileage I ever got out of it. I wonder how the flat bed truck did in comparison with my truck since we travelled the same distance, on the same road, under the same wheather conditions? :dunno:

Unfortunately I must admit that none of my vehicles get good mileage. The Ty passes everything but a gas station. The 92 S-10 passes nothing and still stops at every gas station and my ZX6R is pretty deep in the mod department thus it gets roughly 30 miles per gallon. I am about about that Ozone layer Sunroof!!

Re: Anyone ever hypermiled a Sy/Ty?

Back in 2011, I saw 24-25MPG in the Ty going to and from Denver Nats. No A/C, one window down, the other cracked, new tires, fresh alignment, HTP chip, and not getting crazy with speed/boost. This was all highway/interstate.

My '92 DD Blazer gets incredible gas mileage (highway). I see "consistent" highway MPG of 25-27. Have seen 28.5 and 30MPG on a couple occasions. The city economy is horrid, maybe have seen a best of 16.5, small town stop and go driving. The aerodynamics are probably worse than a SyTy, taller, larger tires, 3.42 rear end, 4X4, 4-door, CMFI engine. I keep the A/C off, one window down, the other cracked, cruise control used constantly, and speed kept under 70. 67-68 MPH seems to be the sweet spot.

A combination of A/C and speeds over 70 seem to be the biggest killers in my experience with my S-series trucks.

All the way from Michigan to Kansas I got 16 mpg in the ZZ4 syclone..kicker is th convertor wouldn't lock the whole way so I kept it about 60mph most of the way.

On my way to Denver Nats, My '92 Ty averaged 17mpg and that was with the A/C blowing and speeds of at least 70mph. The trip from Artesia to Denver isn't exactly flat, lots of hill climbing. Stock turbo, engine and injectors. Did have an ATR airbox and JSM dp and 3" exhaust with no cat. It did better than I though it would.
