gn vs syty in resale

met up with another member today and we talked and he said something I always wondered.. why does the GN have such better resale value then our trucks? they made a lot more Buicks then SYTY's? especially the SY? Anyone got a few good answers? cause Im dying to know. Im a former Buick owner of 3 GN's but it pisses me off that our resale stinks!! :tdown:

Notoriety. Prestige. Aftermarket.

Notoriety in the fact that everyone and their brother worth their racing salt, who's even mildly interested in cars or NASCAR, has heard of one. The Syclone by comparison, is "that fast ruck", or "the truck with the GN engine". GNs have, by and large, enjoyed a popularity comparable to a pit bull. (Not saying pits are bad, just the reputation).

Prestige: How many here have people drool over their trucks at shows? How many people have attended a SyTy Nationals event vs. the GS Nationals. People want to see those cars, and in a place like that, the GNs, T-Types, etc show up in droves. We have amazing people here who pull out all the stops for our National and regional events, but I'm sure it not the scale that those events are attended.... we're just "fast trucks".

Aftermarket for our cars is driven by a highly committed group of people like Sportmachines, Renz, SyTy Perforamance, etc... but even with those people delivering the products they do, we're a small population. Look at the companies we've lost: Kenne Bell, ATR, etc... it's just a numbers game. Ask the guys in the GTO community, they'll empathize with use... nothing is off the shelf for them (unless you want to buy from AU). GNs have a large group committed to them: Caspers, Racetronix, Kirban... they have people who are fanatical in their support of those products.

Don't get me wrong... I love my Typhoon, warts and all. I'm sure the rest of us on here feel the same way. We just don't have that extra *thing* that the GN's have. I'm actually kinda curious if the TTA guys feel the same way we do.

There's many opinions / theorys, that have been beat to death over the years. I've seen some guys on Turbobuick.com that talk about how good the resale is on the SY/TY:roll:
IMO, to name a few reasons:

less of a following
fewer vendors
harder to make go faster for the same $$ involved
less publicity
less research/ unreliability factors
ain't worth piss, other than going in a straight line fast
lots of specific, hard to find parts.
people that don't need them buying them, beating the piss out of them, tearing them up, selling them for nothing, and bitching about how they aint worth shit!!
less fuel mileage

That just names a few reasons, it's been beat to death over the years. I'm sure others will chime in with different opinions. I've known of people that were into turbo Regals that never heard of SY/TY's, that says a lot in my opinion. Many people think they will be worth a lot when they hit that magic 25yr. mark, or if they have one in a new Fast & Furious movie. I have literally 20X more people look at the Grand National when were in it over the Syclone. I've had 5 thumbs up tops in the Syclone since owning it! The GN will get one on ever 2/3 outings! People just don't know or care, and probably won't ever! I hope I'm wrong, anyways beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If your happy that's good enough!:tup:

On a positive note there is not the close knit feeling on the Turbo Buick boards like here. I've only met a handful of you guys, but recognize most of the screen names and different personalities as being unique traits, the TB boards are so big I don't pay attention to screen names. By far these guys over here are a lot more helpful than on Turbo Buick.

I have owned a GN before and I can honestly say that I never got as many thumbs up and good comments like I get now with the Ty and Ive had many many fast cars over the years also. But every statement that you guys have made in this thread I can agree with. You also have to remember that kids these days only care about what they see on TV or the movies and out trucks dont get that publicity anymore.

I can agree with most that has been said but having 3 GN's in the past and knowing that the Typhoon came out having the same seat colors as the Buick but in leather.. that was it, and the all wheel drive,and correct me if Im wrong but at first the Ty was only in blk there for awhile I had to have one. but at the time I couldn't afford one my friend that had a mint 86 GN bought a 92 TY and had both in the garage side by side I shit my self..lol:lol: I think your right though in time I mean how many have we lost already? the numbers have to be down so they are much rarer.. we need a movie to come out to push the price up on these guys..

sorry but they will never be worth blue-chip money like a GN would. Look back a generation, the Lil Red Express isn't pulling in big money. I'm a turbo 6 enthusiast, but you have to remember to take the SyTy blinders off and look at it from an outside perspective. If you want to make money on a SyTy, buy a >10k mile stock truck, and store it away for 20 years. :2cents:

I bought my TR for a fraction of what my Sy or Ty cost. You just have to buy on the right part of the curve.

I agree that there isn't enough difference at times. I still follow the Buicks and they seem to trend close to Sy/Ty's. Catching one at the right time is key though^^^^^^^^^^^

GN had critical mass - enough of them made to gain enough popularity to sustain them but not so many that they are cheap.

SyTy - not enough made so they never gained the publicity to get them a large enough following. Now they are obscure and owned by masochists and will never be worth a lot of money. I find value in the obscurity though. I never wanted a really popular car because I like to be different.

Classics become classic after 25 years. The last GN rolled of the assembly line Dec. 11, 1987 (25 years ago). The SY/TY's are not as well known but in a few more years, they will become more valuable for collectors who do know them.

+1 Not sure how it is in your guys area but here in oklahoma and in dallas I love when I bring a syclone out and I am the only one at the car meet or races. Every time I take it somewhere there are people that come around to look at the truck and see if it's a real syclone lol. I used to bring out the truck and several 9 sec gto's and more people hung around the syclone.

lol, i show my truck 3 times a week every week in the summer, and every conversation always includes "Buick Grand National". Whether it be the "GMC with the GN motor", or the "GN inspired truck" or the "GNX pickup".

I find value in the obscurity though. I never wanted a really popular car because I like to be different.

This is exactly how I feel. I've had a GN, and while I did, all I wanted was a Typhoon. I don't drive cars or trucks that I'm going to see driving on the road with me. Now, I know that there aren't many GNs running around, but I feel that I'm more likely to see them than another Ty. With that, I really do want another GN. :lol:

Grand National are much more well known today and I bet they will hold their value better. (They were a cheaper car to begin with). Back in the day when they came out they had have reputation of being sleepers and earned their place as being fast. GN have two things going for them over a SyTy.

1- they are much easier to modify, it doesn't take a guru to make turbo regal fast. Turbo buicks are friendly to non-tuner types.
2- they are much more reliable. If you make a mistake with turbo regal it blows the heads gasket, a SyTy you make a mistake and the stock motor blows. They are also less temperamental and easier to work on.
