i can not figure it out

for the life of me i can not figure out why the sy will not run. just installed a new motor and this is the only time i have ever had this problem and i have done many installs before this. started off i made a mistake and put the distributer in backwards. i swapped it around 180 and it fired right up but ran ruff. went to set timing and the engine died from running ruff. plus i forgot to unplug the brown wire. started it back up tightened the dis bolt down only to find i had it on hold down on upside down. had to pull the dis out to turn the hold down back around since i could not fit my hand down in there. so i thought maybe i fouled the plugs from all the pre trying to start cranks. well the 3 on the drivers side looked very very bad all black and bad gas smell. i swapped them all out, the pas side looked fine though which i thought was odd. well anyways now with new plugs in i can not start it at all. just cranks and cranks. i thought maybe i put the dis in backwards again so i swapped the plug wires on the cap all over 1 to reverse the fire order but still no luck still just cranks. i know i have gas i can smell it and am guessing i have spark since i did before i changed the plugs. double checked all wires are on and back in the correct firing order.

so anyone have any clue what could be the issue this time? besides me and trying to rush to get this thing done already.

Ignition module fried. See if the Scan tool is seeing reference pulses when you crank.

Re: i can not figure it out

what do you mean Ignition module i know the gn has one it is a big box sits under the coil, is the tys built into the coil as well? if not where is it and what does it look like? guess i never had a bad one?

Re: i can not figure it out

The ignition module is the box inside the distributor that the 4 prong and 2 prong connectors plug into....by the way, this is a tough diagnosis over the cpu. You said you have gas . COnfirm you have spark by testing for it and also get a fuel presure gauge on it to make sure your cranking fuel has the correct pressure. I mean on a new install it could be so many things...even something as dumb as a ground left unconnected. Given that all things check out, always go back to fuel and spark. 9 times out of 10, its something related to that.

Re: i can not figure it out

i'd start back at the begining and verify tdc and check the firimg order, then check for spark on all the plugsm maybe a wire loose on the distributer or fried module

Re: i can not figure it out

I have had to deal with bad ignition modules on all the GM vehicles that I have owned. When I used to have mysterious problems, it was the last things that I suspected now it is one of the first. These things can cause the types of problems that will make you crazy...

"If the chip is installed correctly, and you definitely have both spark and fuel pressure, your ignition module is dead. A bad ignition module won't generate a reference pulse preventing the injectors from firing. Part number is 1048-2827 (located under your distributor cap, BTW). Some auto chain stores can test to confirm it it's good or bad."

If it is bad when you get a new one, it will come with a little packet of heat sink grease. Be sure to use ALL of it or else the new module won't live for very long since that it what keeps it cool.

The plugs that are on the bottom of the pic will be towards the firewall. The plug marked "P N" in the top of the pic is under the distributor and can be a pain to unplug since the wire going to it is VERY short. A small flat head screw driver works best on that one.

Re: i can not figure it out

Yup, back to square one, verify TDC #1 compression stroke and set dist accordingly. Also you can check spark by plugging a spark plug into the coil wire and (making sure the plug is grounded) crank the motor. Since it sorta ran already I'm betting on spark/timing.

You said one set of plugs looked almost fouled and the other clean. Make sure you've seated all inj connectors on their respective injs. and that inj harness is fully connected where it goes into the loom.

Re: i can not figure it out

well i need a dis for the ty so i will just go by a new dis and try that. if it works i will go by a inj mod for the sy dis. if that does not work i will go back to ground 1 and check everything from the beginning. i dont know why one side of the plugs got so bad and the other side looked new just had a little gas smell to them. i did check the inj plugs and made sure 2,4,6 are on the pas side. the 1, 3, 5 side are on the drivers. drivers side has no numbers on them but by the length of wire out of the loom i am 99% sure they are on right as well.

If your getting spark and fuel... and it's in time... Possible cam gear/chain installed wrong or in-proper valve adjustmet/lash/preload.
Can't hook a bunch up wrong under the hood. 99% only go's on one plug/connection.
Check fueses also.. start simple and work to the hard stuff.

Re: i can not figure it out

Don throw a papertowel in #1 crank til it pop out! Set the dist right 1st step before anything.

Then make sure you got strong spark off the coil, and then make sure your brown timing wire is plugged in until its running and then unplug it.

Module could go bad but if you had it running and then pulled the dist to fix hold down chances are its just not right.

Re: i can not figure it out

Make sure you have a "Check Engine" light on with your Ign. on. Simple, but often overlooked...

Re: i can not figure it out

thanks guys went out for a bit today and started from the beginning. set tdc, pulled and set the dis in place, changed the ing mod while it was out, cap rotor wires, battery and it fired right up first try. sounds good again.
now just got to find out why my "atr style" ic pump is making so much noise i thought maybe it had air in it but i held it in the air and filled till it till itcould hold no more then open the lower ic up and let it drain while running and close it up and topped it off and i see flow in the upper ic but the ic pump is so noisy.
