I have a ticking under my tranny tunnel, Vibrates w rpm,Fuel lines??

I cant find this noise  I think its my fuel lines hitting the tranny or under the truck. I also have a big knock count and its pulling alot of timing. I figure its false knock from this noise but i cant get rid of it. The DM files show everything runs and looks great except for this unknown knock.I had the truck on the lift and the only place i could see the lines were touching anywhere at all i stuffed a rag...noise is still there. When its up in the air the noise is gone. As soon as i lower the truck back on the ground its back. In the engine bay and under truck i hear nothing. Its only when im in the cab w the windows up. Anyone experience something like this?? Whats a good fix for the fuel lines if thats the culprit?

does it vibrate really bad? when my torque converter was going out it vibrated alot.

Find some cheap 5/16" or 3/8" ID hose, cut it down the middle (so as to open it up length wise - like wiring conduit) the entire length of the hose, and slide it onto the existing hard line. 5/16" fits better, but 3/8" would be easier to slide on. You could also just cut out some 6" sections, slit it, and slide it over the lines every foot or so.

Wow, simple and yet sounds like a perfect solution. Im going to give that a try.

I dont believe its my convertor, It really sounds like something tin sounding rattling off the sheetmetal of the transmission tunnel. This is why i just guessed it was my fuel lines. Ive been all over every nut and bolt and anything else loose that it could be. I had the dust shield off the bellhousing with the truck running and everything looked and sounded normal.

Check where the fuel lines are located near the top of the transnission on drivers side of the truck. When I have encounted this problem on other trucks, that's where they were touching the sheet metal at. Usually as the result of a motor swap and the lines got bent out of shape... If that's not the culprit. check the heat shield over the downpipe. That is usually a rattling type noise and is very easy to locate.

Anything is possible, however i did check all that area out w the truck running. Its a sfi approved one, new, and thicker than stock. The noise is only evident at idle. When driving you cant hear it.

This sounds exactly like my Sy. I finally bought a stethoscope and the only thing I can hear making it is the injectors... I adjusted them and it made no difference. It drives me nuts in mine. I still suspect a valve adjustment on mine, even though my stethoscope doesn't pick up anything from the valve covers. I'll pull them off one of these days and adjust them just to put my mind at ease.

I also found that my engine 'sounded' a lot quieter once I got rid of the metal IC coolant lines, and the one heater core to radiator metal line that attaches to the battery tray.

Which chip are you using? My Sy originally had a KB chip in it and was showing all sorts of KR. Since then I've been tuning with '59 and have gotten rid of the knock.

I did the valve adjustment check and found nothing. I did gain new cover gaskets though.

It's the injs on mine I assume. I lifted the rails to the top of the slot in the hold-downs (per the factory notice) and it made no difference either.

HOWEVER I'm very interested in what gets found here. I've got another strange noise coming from the cowl area right side but under the truck. Primarily RPM related, still looking.

you guys do know your valves are not adjustable right? unless you have solid lifters.

I have solid mounts so i have a few noises but really not bad. you wouldnt know there were solid mounts unless i told someone. This is the most apparent noise though and im pretty confident its fuel lines, I just need to somehow shut them up. Ive also heard of the injector pulsing vibrating the lines against the tunnel. This sounds louder than that though

I just thought of something that happened to me recently. I had to get my typhoon inspected and ended up putting the egr back in, after I did that I noticed a ticking that went up as the rpms would rise. After I took it out and put my block off plate back in it went away and was back to normal, so my guess is that it was leaking.

Yes. However, injector preload is adjustable (at the rockers). BTW mine were fine. This is when I continued on and found the bad intake gasket which made the whole endeavor worthwhile.

Hmmm, page 6A3-5 of the service manual shows a valve adjustment procedure - one turn down past 'null' point... searching the posts here it seems everyone agrees that 1/2 turn is better, and that best may be done with engine running 1/8 to 1/2 turn. Book shows hydraulic lifters.

I assume that we have pressed in rocker studs and there is always the possibility of a stud pulling out... just like the old SBC's we used to screw around with.
