Leaky Passenger side axle

I took the 6 bolts off the passenger axle and pulled the axle out of the tube. Now where the tube meets the axle is a leak I've taken it out in the past without it leaking but this time I wasn't so lucky.
I also notice now when i push and pull on the axle there is a gap that forms where the tube meats the axle. Since the tube is bolted and fixed in place and the axle is held in place by the axle nut how can I fix this leak?!

I did the same thing on the driver side and noticed no gap when pushing/pulling..

You probably just damaged the axle seal. The clip on the end of the axle might also be bad, that's why the axle isn't staying put. You might try replacing both and see where your at.

I'm looking at the haynes manual for this procedure and they remove the tube from the transfercase. However I just pulled the axle out of the tube and it's leaking there. Right where the rusty ring and the tube meet. Is there a seal there? If so anyone have a part #?

Look at that gap!

I'm not sure any gasket would fix this problem of it shifting and creating that gap... there has to be another solution?

Hey David!
This will clear it up for you.

1,2,3,4,5,6,8

8 is the clip I talked about. Make sure it's on there. If it's not hopefully it's not down in the front diff somewhere waiting to cause problems.
That piece your worried about is #2. A deflector. Not an issue.
The part that's causing the leak is #3. That's the seal and I've put up the Helms instructions for it.
#4 is the bearing. When you pull this tube, make sure it's not worn out or spun out.

That seal is hard as a rock as old as it is now. Replace it. The surface of the driveaxle that rides on it needs to be cleaned up too. Don't machine it or anything. Just some sandpaper. 100 grit followed up with 320 grit should clean it up really nice so the seal has a nice clean surface to ride on.

All of the above. There is still a very slight in and out movement to the axle when it is in-place, fully seated, clip 8 "engaged." Seal is easily replaced. Yours is toast. I believe the seal is NAPA 12494 Clean that axle a bit before sliding it past the new seal. Based on what little bit I can see of the axle, I'd bet bearing prolly OK.
