Rear diff and rear axle question

Q#1: Any reason why this wouldn’t work on our trucks:

http://www.slponline.com/view_product.asp?PARTNUMBER=64501T

7.5” or 7.625”, 28 spline, 3-series. Sounds like ours, unless I’m missing something.

In case anyone’s wondering, I blew my rear out Sat during our wrench session. I’d REALLY like to get the stout Eaton diff for our trucks, but don’t think I can swing the $$ right now. This could be a cheap alternative.

Q2: Will 96+ 4X4 S-10 Blazer rear axles fit syclones?

I’d like to swap to rear disc, and thought I saw a post stating that the 96+ Blazer rears would work. I can get a 96 3.42 limited-slip GU6 code rear for a couple hundred $. Would this be a pretty straight-forward swap onto my sy?

A:1 yes it should work. might just want to check that it fits the 3.42 but I'm sure it does

A:2 The later model diff's are stronger and should bolt right up.

One more question. When I do a search on 96 Blazer 4X4, 8.5" ring gear, w/oZR2 option (3.42 ratio, option GU6), only vehicles from 95-97 show up. When I do the exact same search but using 98 as the year, only 98-02 vehicles show. Is there a big difference between the two? (or is one preferred over the other?)

The older 96 rears are a little cheaper, so IF either the 96s or the 98s work, I'd obviously go with the 96. Just wantin to make sure.

you want the larger ring gear.(8.5) and I'm not sure if the ZR2 will drop in. it may be wider. simple take measure wil solve that... later stuff begins to get more and more stock disc's so that may be a option too.

If you're talking about the whole axle, the ZR2 is wider. Either 2" or 4" wider overall, if I remember correctly... I think it's 2" on each side for a total of 4", because 1" on each side would basically even it up with the front wheels, eliminating the need for different offset wheels.

I knew the ZR2s were not the correct rears, but didn't know the 98+ were all (or more) disc. So maybe that explains some of the general increase in price (in addition to them just being newer)? Thanks for the info guys.

Just go and get the larger front disk brakes (with hubs) from a '98 up S10 4x4 Blazer. They have a 10.8" diameter disk with a much larger 2 piston caliper (and much larger disk pads) than the Sy/Ty's 10.5" disk and single piston caliper. They are a direct bolt-on, and even have a better internal ABS senser that is much improved from the earlier one that the Sy/Ty has that is mounted external on the backing plate.

Also, for the rear end, get the rear disk brakes off of a '98 up 2WD S10 Blazer. They are a direct bolt-on to the Sy/Ty's drum brake rear end. The only thing that has to be done to adapt it is the emergency brake cables from the '98 up S10 Blazer have to be modified on one end to mate up with the Sy/Ty's arrangement. Use the outer sheath from the Sy/Ty, but the cables from the '98 up S10 Blazer to do this. Just cut the cables to match the same length as the Sy/Ty's cables and attach a piece of round bar stock that is drilled and tapped for a allen set screw to clamp down on the cable. Doing so will work like a charm.

By the way, you could also just find a '98 up 8.5" rear end from an S10 4x4 truck, as they already have the rear disk brakes as well, and are a much stronger rear end that is a bolt-in to a Sy/Ty!! They are not that hard to find on http://www.car-part.com.

I read on another site that the ZR2's do have wider axles in the rear. I believe 1 1/2" or 2" on each side.

edit* here is the info I found:
RPO ZR2 only full ladder-type frame with modified suspension mounting points which provide:

100mm wider track (3.9 inches wider than regular S-10)

Three-inch suspension height increase

Enhanced front (7.25" ring gear) and rear (8.5" ring gear) axles w/ 3.73:1 rear-axle ratio

Larger wheel and axle bearings

31 x 10.5R-15 LT/C black wall off-road tires (BFG A/Ts on pickups and BFG Long Trails on BlaZeR2)

46mm gas pressurized Bilstein Monotube shocks

Rear axle track bar (pickups) / rear sway bar (BlaZeR2)

Wheel flares (black on S-10 pickups and BlaZeR2 / body-color on Sonoma pickups)

33mm (early model) / 28mm (late model) front anti-sway bar

Skid plates

It really wasn't that bad. There were some small metal shards, but no major shrapnel laying in the fluid. Got a replacement on the way 8)
