Is there a special way in which you guys apply and remove Black Chrome? I just tried it on my cladding and it seems as though the oxidation still shows through, i followed the instructions as per the label......... :dunno:

Cotton cloth, apply a liberal amount and work into the cladding. If your cladding is very dry and oxidized, you will probably have to go over spots again.

Black Chrome is a plastic/rubber lotion, you have to work it into the cladding....cant just wipe it on and wipe it off.

Good idea is to take whatever cloth your using after your done and put it into a zip lock bag to use over and over again. After you wash your truck or get into rain, black chrome streaks. You can take the cloth and just rub over it again and bring back the luster without having to reapply from the bottle unless the black chrome is completely gone.

OK, going back to the old email list days, one trick that was used (by myself included) was to take a bottle, empty half out into a container for later use, and fill the bottle back up with Kiwi black liquid shoe polish. Shake well. The mixture will make your cladding black, black, black. Of course you have to buff it after it dries so you don't get the polish rubbing off on your hands, clothes, etc. FWIW, YMMV, etc.

How do you know that? Just curious.

Actually i am assuming that because that's what i have been told by a lot of people that seem to know where certain cars/trucks are and who owns them. {members of other car forums that i am a member of} If there is another around the owner never has it outside. There are rumors of 2 others in Winnipeg that are owned by rich kids but i snooped around and it seems as though they are just rumors. :dunno:

Anyone here ever try this method?

It works, It's just that it's only 83% strong. Exchange rate, dontcha know.

Original poster- You will need a lot of it. Apply it with your fingers, rub it in good, let it dry, then buff it a bit. You may need to do this a couple of times.

After a couple of years, you get sick of it and have your cladding painted....

Re: Using Black Chrome??

Ive seen the shoe polish method done as well.... never tried it myself.
There was also the mop n glow....wasnt about to put a house hold wax on my cladding.

always stuck with black chrome since it was meant for plastic and a lotion. nowadays I dont have to worry about it since my cladding got unwantingly painted after an accident. i use the crap outta black chrome now under the hood though....

Re: Using Black Chrome??

Over time I've actually decided I personally like the plain gray "dry look". The black chrome seemed to require frequent touch up and attracted dirt. Actually now use a little denatured alcohol on a rag to wipe it clean and remove any spots or wax, keeping it looking uniform in color.

I do need though need to figure out a permanent way to stop a crack I've got under the driver's door rocker that's slowly growing aft. I used super glue on the backside in hopes of not showing the shine of the glue but wonder if anything else is out there to use?

Re: Using Black Chrome??

you need to stop using the alcohol period....your doing alot more damage than if you did nothing. by removing the wax and any other means of protection, your leaving the plastic to dry out, weaken and degrade, hence the crack.

That's true, the crack did start slowly growing more so past 2 years as I've used the alcohol. hmmm, guess Ive got to go back to the black chrome but I do like the plain gray two tone look. If only the cost of replacement pieces weren't so high, I'd swap that cracked panel.
