Windshield leaking

Has anyone had any luck resealing their windshield? I talked with a local glass shop and they said it is not advisable to remove and re-install windshields for that year vehicle. He wanted to just seal it from the inside with silicone. I don't think that will work very well. I have resealed many windshields with the old tar ribbons and chrome trim, but none with the rubber trim. OR should I just get a new windshield installed?

Re: Windshield leaking

Where is it leaking at? My old daily driven S10 developed a leak over the passenger side at the top of the windshield. My bud who did auto glass for 16 years took care of it for me with some urethane from the inside. If it is leaking in a location that is going to require you the remove the molding(s), you are probably going to have to pull the windshield. Because after you pull the molding(s) out, the old urethane isn't going to be able to hold it in place anymore. And there won't be enough room to "tack" it in place with fresh urethane...

The "don't remove and reinstall" sounds kinda hokey to me. Sounds more like the shop doesn't want to have to buy YOU a new windshield if THEY break it removing it. It is VERY easy to break a windshield even for the pros.

Eventually, I got a huge crack in the windshield due to a stone in my S10 and had to replace it. Ended up pulling a OEM windshield out of a junkyard truck myself with the help of a friend for $20. Gave my bud $20 for urethane and I was good to go until I crashed that sob :(...

Re: Windshield leaking

It is leaking across the top on both sides of the interior mirror. Some times I can push on the sealant along the top and it will stop, but this time it is leaking a lot more. I think the leack comes from too much interior air pressure in the summer. Most of the time I leave a small gap at the top of the door windows, but this past summer I didn't because I was getting too much dust inside the cab.

Re: Windshield leaking

my local mobile glass guy did mine with no problems. he also suggested the better windshield rubber instead of the stock christmas tree style but i had ordered the stock seal already.

What did he do and what is stock Christmas tree style?

Re: Windshield leaking

he had a sawzall with a wide blade similar to a putty knife to cut the glass out and just lifted it out and cleaned it all up. the stock style pushes in around the glass while the better stuff is c channel that you put on the glass before you install it.

All right, thanks. I will try calling different glass shops until I find one that knows what you are saying.

Yep, the good old air knife. Compared to wiring out the windshield with "piano wire", it's like a slingshot vs. a machine gun . If it wasn't so late, I would call my bud and ask him about the c channel stuff that you mentioned. I'll ask him about it tomorrow since I haven't heard of it before...

You hit the nail on the head. I called another glass shop this morning and they said it was about a 30 minute job. Thanks for all the responses.

Re: Windshield leaking

OK I spoke to my bud last night about the c channel stuff that NecroWolf mentioned. Just as I figured, you still have to use urethane to seal everything up. There is butyl inside the c channel to hold it on the glass but urethane, just like what is on there now, holds the c channel in place and seals up the window. My bud said that they are both equal in their sealing ability but the c channel looks better because it can't pull away from the glass like the old style moldings do that just press into the urethane in between the glass and pillar.

He got a good laugh about the shop by you that said "not advisable to remove and re-install windshields for that year vehicle". He said what I did that they didn't want to buy you new windshield if they broke yours taking it out . Shops like that make me chuckle. They would rather give you bogus info rather than tell you like it T.I. is...

Re: Windshield leaking

Well, I went to the glass shop that said they could easily remove and reinstall my old windshield. When I got there, they look at my Sy and told me the same thing the previous glass shop did, "it is not advisable to remove and re-install that type windshield because the old rubber seal it old and the windshield might break." So, where is a shop that will reseal a Sy windshield?

Re: Windshield leaking

our windshields are the cheapest i have ever seen, i think mine was under or right at 100 dollars so i don't see what their issue is.

DITTO. Sounds like given the "options" in your area, I would break the windshield with a center punch in their parking lot and tell them that you need a new one (be sure that they have a replacement for you on hand to minimize replacement time). Break it so that they don't just clean the old urethane off and sell it after you're gone and make $ off you 2X ...

Re: Windshield leaking

Glass Masters came out today and tried to remove the old windshield so it could be resealed. The windshield broke on removal so they installed a new one with all new larger c channel trim. Upon removal and clean up of the old windshield mounting surface it was discovered that the old one was NEVER install properly. The cheapest urethane, plus the smallest bead possible, was used to install the old windshield. Oh well, at least it didn't cost me anything to had it repaired. I found out I had zero deductible. FYI, the old windshield was installed at Don Bohn Autoplex, New Orleans, a GMC dealership.

Re: Windshield leaking

Glad to hear that you got it fixed :)! Being that there was such a *small* bead of urethane holding your old window in and it still broke goes to show how easy it is to break. Sometimes they break when they are installed too .

Re: Windshield leaking

Sorry to resurrect - where do you guys advise buying the glass and c trim from?

I have an incorrect rubber strip in mine, not the christmas tree stock style and I also have a leak. I asked for a remove and repair price - £120 ($180)... not horrendous.

Then the guy said that if they break it, which can happen, then it would cost me...

wait for it....

£780... ($1200!!)

:dropjaw:

So I need to source it, ship it and maybe get them to install it...

Re: Windshield leaking

Is glass breakage covered by your insurance? The total cost to install my new windshield, back then, was $182. But I think the shipping on glass that large, out of the country, would be astronomical and it would probably break in shipping, expecially if UPS ships it. If you want, I can give you the address and number of the company.

Re: Windshield leaking

Truck is off the road so no insurance :(

I sort of feel like I might be best to just take it out very, very carefully with that air tool and go from there. Yeah, air freight is pretty pricey I expect.

Damn. I knew I should have done it when I was in the US. Double damn.
