Time for a chat with Torque Converter builder

What do I need to know? I noticed a few things that struck me funny when the TY was running. It looks like I may have this back together fairly quick and thought I would address a few issues before hand while the motor was out. In first gear, from a stop, the truck never sees boost. Turbo is a 67gtq non BB. Stall is at 3k. I have not actually checked this out by revving it up with the brakes on but thats what I "ordered". Now in third gear between 30-40mph, you get a very snappy down shift like usual and the truck flies away. I don't quite get why I am not seeing any boost by the end of first gear though. Is this going to be in the motor? the tune? or the TC? If anyone has any thoughts let me know. Also, I want to consider having this re-stalled, if I do, what does the builder need to know to get it right?

If you want minimal issues, buy a converter from specialized converter company. Most small shops are guessing stalls based on daaco or transtar specs and assembling them with inferior parts made for the OEM replacement market and not high performanece.

Re: Time for a chat with Torque Converter builder

When we have a converter made we give the builder every bit of vehicle info we can from the basics (weight) to the incredible specifics such as camshaft specs, a dyno sheet, gear ratios, tire diameter ect...
A recent build on a super stocker s-10 truck is just about to go under 1 full second of the national index but the truck has had 10+ converters as we are trying to narrow down a very specific power band range as it is a small cubic inch very high rpm engine (<310" and shifting at 10,800). You won't need to be that specific but all the basics listed plus turbo info, heads, bore & stroke ect... You should be seeing boost in 1st gear without issue. Prob. have a diff issue rather than the conv.

What is the A/R on the turbine housing & what is the turbine wheel size?

I dont know. The ar on the exhaust housing is .85. I dont have a single clue as to how to get the specs on this turbo. I have looked at PTE's site but it confuses me and I cant figure out which one on there is the actual turbo I have.

You have a 6780HPQ, the rest of the numbner is the cover and if you have a BB turbo. I would guess you have atleast T04S Cover (4" Inlet). This post on Turbo Buick helps explain the number PTE uses.

With the .85 A/R on the housing,I would think you need a 3000-3500 stall.

Also depends on what size your turbine wheel is,if it is an "S" trim it will be a bit laggy.:2cents:

Re: Time for a chat with Torque Converter builder

Coincidentally I just stalled mine today. Supposed to be 2800, stalled at 3500. I'm guessing that it's because of the torque these motors make. Will prolly have it re-stalled this winter.
