when I did mine I used a flex shaft with a magnetized bit and a little bosch impact driver. or do it redneck style and tape it to the bit or screwdriver. and taking the front passenger seat out makes it WAAAAAY easier. well worth taking 4 nuts off.

Tubomatt- Thanks for the insight. Didn't even think of the flex shaft. I'll pick one of those up tomorrow. Duh!! Trying to stay away from the redneck way if at all possible!!:myclone:

My bigger question is how the hell can you ever line up the hold down screw with the hole in the box??!! Its soo damn dark once you get it all together, not to mention the foam insulation in the way.

I just keep feeling around, but unfortunately all ive done so far is mark up the area around the hole!!!

These stock screws just seem too damn short for this application.

When you try again put a little hair around the hole, the screw will go right in.

Dave, Ray- Thanks for the tips.

Ray- hair, Really?!?

Dave- I took out the 10mm Bolt for the IC at the right kick panel. Didn't think of doing it at the center console.

Remarkably- Things went pretty smooth for a first time HC install, until this one #%$* Hold down screw location. I've seen no chatter for this one specific location. Am I the only one with trouble with this re-inserting this one?

About 2 hrs to tear down to the old HC and install the new one. I've spent the past three hrs on this one piece of crap screw.:rant::rant:

I'm done for the night. I'll tear back into it tomorrow with some of these new recs.

i always leave the screw braely threaded in just enough to spin the hold down strap away and get the core out, still sucks to get in and tighten it, but it's better than accidently cross threading it and striping out the plastic hole, then it's junk.

Re: Heater Core Hold Down Strap &*%*%#&

So it just dawned on my that my replacement AC Delco HC I dropped in today came with a foam insulating strip which I applied. This strip wrapped all the way around the outer edge of the HC. (the copper colored area)

In the images off all the HCs I've seen, this strip is not present. I'm now wondering if the increased thickness with this foam strip could be in effect shortening the hold down strap making it more difficult for the holes to line up. Maybe tomorrow I will take this strip off and retry.
