my ty versus my friends evo 8

boost
well last night i lined up against my friends 04 evo 8. im completely stock except for exhaust. he has an 20g, exhaust, aem fuel management, 550cc injectors and a whole bunch of other stuff.

we lined up and i started to build boost and i could hear him revin it real loud, so i assumed he was going to launch real hard. i had about 4 lbs and he took off. so i let it go and i was right beside him for a couple of seconds, then he started pulling on me. he got about 1.5 cars on me when our road came up to turn on.

when we got back to his house i asked him what he launched at. he said he wasn't paying attention at the rpms the he realized he was at around 7k, then he brought it down to around 4.5k.
he kept on asking me what i had done to the ty, i kept telling him all it has is exhaust. i think i really surprised him.

even though i lost i was proud of my ty, cause i was stock and he has about 6-7k in that car. i was basically right beside him.

Re: my ty versus my friends evo 8

I remember when I couldnt take one out. When I was stock, I could hang with them for about the 1/8th or so then they would pass me up. A lot of the EVO guys around here wont race me, wheather its cause thedy know Ill rape em or just cause they dont like to race IM not sure. I raced one from a roll about a month ago and I pulled away consistently up to about 75. They can be pretty bad ass thoguh.

Evo's are a tough nut to crack, they dont have much in the low end but up top they can fly. Great kill, with those mods he can probly run in the 11s.

My 03' EVo VIII ran low low 13's stock, last run was 13.13 at 103mph. My bolt-on's 92' Typhoon would rape it from a stop.

RIP him out of the hole and then shut it down around 85mph and grin. That's what I did against an EVO MR. Lucky for him, I was only running pump gas and 14psi at the time. Nice cars, don't try to hang with one in the corners, obviously.

With that much work into his EVO, he doesnt have a 2-step on it? odd. Every single one I see thats modded and running good times has a 2-step. Good race either way, probably would have been even if you launched at the same time.

I don't think I could stay with em too long going straight right now, but with this suspension stuff I did, I bet I could hang with them in the corners. I'll have to give you a ride in that thing dude.

Im sure your Ty handles awsome, especially compared to stock, but even upgraded there sill is a big diference when compared with a IRS vehical, that I THINK has a Mcpherson strut setup on it all the way around. Plus there is the weight distribution issue and height issue. Im not trying to shoot you down, just from what i've been reading these vehicals are not one to take lightly. Trust me I would love to get my Sy to handle as well as said vehicals.

Re: my ty versus my friends evo 8

My Dad has raced in Evo's and wan't very impressed. I beat them all at the autocross, why would a twisted mountain road be much different? The car's maybe a couple inches shorter and is basically a front wheel drive with a little help in the rear. Maybe I'm wrong though, guess I could find one this weekend at a meet to fool around with on Highway 9...

PS: cars with Mcpherson strut setups usually try to get away from it and go with coilovers much like I have.

All my info was from reading and hearsay so your real life info would defeat that for me since I've never drove one.

I understand you have a coilover setup ( yes i'm jealous ) but I would think that the solid rear axle would hold you back as much performance as the coilovers gained you, compared to a 4 wheel independent Mcpherson car, I could be wrong though.

OK if the EVO is basically FWD ( I thought they had more of a split making them closer to a AWD ) how would you far up against a WRX or STI in the twisties, I've only drove one once so again dont know how well they preform other than hearsay

Re: my ty versus my friends evo 8

I don't think with the custom 300# flexaforms that the solid rear axle is holding me back all that much, at least in relation to an evo. I think the new MR has provisions for making the car have a 50-50% power ratio, but I'm not sure about the normal 8. I think they have more like 70ft and 30rear. I asked my Dad who's been racing for years, and who has driven both, and he agreed with me. Don't wanna end up with my foot in my mouth, but I feel that against most normal drivers out there, the Ty could give em a good run. STi's are a bit better, but a bit less driver friendly at the same time.

Re: my ty versus my friends evo 8

I forget exacty why. I could go ask my Dad, or just look it up in a Car and Driver test they did. They pretty much summed it up there. With the right driver, the STi had more potential around a track.

There are a bunch of tests that pit the EVO against the STI. Google it.

The EVO is one of the best handling sedans to ever be mass produced. Assuming a car is "slow" because someone at the local autoX cant make it perform is not wise, dad or not.

Re: my ty versus my friends evo 8

I own a Syclone with lots of mods, I also own an 1985 Toyota Corolla GTS AE86 with tons of mods as well especially suspension & chassis. And I also have 2005 Lancer Evolution RS 2.4L RnR, GT35R. HKS exhaust. AEM EMS, etc. Any way My Evo in its stock form was much faster on canyons & race tracks then both AE86 & Sy. My AE86 is way faster then my Syclone. I ran both Evo & Syclone @ Willow Springs Big Track. Evo ran 1:37.40 & Syclone ran 1:46.31. You can ask Mike Lee @ RPM. He knows me well. I have raced for 11 years now. From Datsun 510s, 3000GT VR4. NSX & lots of different Porsches. All the cars I have listed were modified for track use & Evo can keep up with most of them. I suggest you get some Best Motoring videos so you can see for your self who Evos go against Skyline GT-Rs, Porsche 996 Turbos, NSX-R, Lamborghini, etc. So you can realy learn about Evos. WRX is better then Evo on dirt & rally tracks I will agree but on Tarmac Evo will school WRX Sti any day of the week regardless of who is driving it. Stay Safe!

I'd really question that statement. Anything to verify it? I've seen plenty of Evos AutoX and they don't seem to do all that well, I'd hope they're a bit better of a road course. Andre Twin, I'm sure a extrememly modded AE86 would beat your Sy, and even Evo, I saw Initial D, haha. You mention your Sy is modded, would that be suspension or drivetrain?
