Stock/20g turbo question

I did some searching and couldn't find my answer. Here's the deal. I have a stock turbo on the Ty right now w/ a 8cm exh housing, then I have a 20g with a 14 cm exhaust housing. My question is, can I take the 8cm exhaust housing off and put it on the 20g in place of the 14cm?
The only reason I'm asking is I am going to get a bigger stall in the future but not right now and don't want to loose the quick spool up but would like the extra cfm of the 20g compressor. I wasn't for sure if the turbine is the same and the only difference is the housing so it would go on with no problems. Any input/opinions would be great.
Thanks.

Re: Stock/20g turbo question

Doubtful.

Most 14cm2 housings are machined for the "6h" turbine wheel, which is larger than the stock "6" wheel. You can measure them to make sure:

Turbine wheel Inducer / Exducer

TD05h = 1.930 / 2.200
TD06 = 2.175 / 2.560
TD06h = 2.315 / 2.650

HTH.

Re: Stock/20g turbo question

Thanks. I kinda figured they may have different size turbines.
Probably just put the 20g on there as is and deal with a little bit more lag till I get a higher stall.

Why not just put the whole 20g on there?

That's probably what I'm going to do. I actually had this same 20g on my Sy for a while with a stock converter and it wasn't too bad. Was just kinda curious about the interchangablity.

I guess it depends on the individual however I have a 20g with 12cm2 housing and I don't like the lag at all on the stock TC. No matter what I do, I can only build 1 psi at launch and feel like I am really gassing it to make boost around town.

I had a custom tune done and it helped with spool but the larger housing naturally lags more. I am not trying to turn you away but depending on your short and long term goals, you might be better with the stocker for the time being.

you cannot put the 8cm on the 20g totally different size. the 20g will also drive like poo on the stock conv and the truck will be slower but you already know that.

mine actually feels faster :dunno: .......although the lag does suck :tdown:

It's just a six

You can have your stock turbine housing machined to fit your 20G.
I had it done & it worked great!

The boost really came on fast!

where did you get it sone? Did you have the stock stall converter? How was it w/ launching?

I had it done @ my old work.
But I think these guys are the cheapest that knows what they are doing. http://www.boostplanet.com/

It launched as hard as ever & boost came in faster than w/a stock turbo.

I picked up much more mid range torque w/the 20G & a 8 CM turbine housing.
My MPH improved to about 1-2 MPH.
If you go that route I would port the housing as much as you can to the the exhaust flow better.

BTW, I also had a larger flapper valve installed for great boost control.

Jeff, I am liking the sound of this!!!!

jbonehead85 - it is possible the truck is faster up top but the lag is probably killing the drag racing times.

Example - the best I ran with Ultimate chip and stock turbo was 13.18 @99.7. This was on 104 octane running 19psi. After upgrading to the 20g and going back to the track, I ran a 14.3@99.1. This was on pump gas 16psi. My 60 foot went from a 1.79 to a 2.3.

You can see my mile an hour is almost the same with less boost so I know I picked up some top end at the cost of ET and launch.

Yeah, I had the same turbo also. On the stock convertor it was slooooowwwww to spool. Wen it did, it was sweet though, it spun a pretty good bit when it spooled (even with awd). I think the trans lasted about 2 months with the new turbo.

Wow, look at the potential. Over a second slower ET, half second 60ft sower, but still the same mph. Alot of power there, just need the convertor for it!

Oh it def. sucks off the line and in the 1/4 but it is faster up top hands down
