Whats up with towing

Hey guys, I was wondering whats up with Sy's and Ty's towing stuff? I've seen a couple Sy's AND a couple Ty's with tow hitch receivers hidden behind a spring hinged license plate. Whats up with that? I thought thats Sy's and Ty's couldnt tow. Car and Driver review said no towing either. http://sportmachines.com/magrack/car_driver_3-92.html Any Thoughts? Do they have to do some supsension mods or something?

I think they mostly towed small things like jetskis, anything bigger than that and you will prob run into some issues.

So with the stock rear supsension and a tow bar installed under the rig you can tow something small like a jetski or say a dirtbike or two? with no modifications at all?

Truckless. For now.
Re: Whats up with towing

do a search for a member here - TowingTyphoon - i believe. He tows a big boat with his Ty. There was a thread he posted on everything he did to beef up the suspension, etc.

Haven't seen him post in a long time, but I'm sure the thread is still there if you dig deep enough.

the single biggest thing you need to worry about is the stock IC system. it is designed to handle ~13 sec of WOT and then a cool off period and then 13 sec again.

so if you go blasting up a long hill at 15psi you will run out of cold water in the ic and the motor will detonate and tear itself apart.

upgrade the rear springs and the IC or at least monitor the MAT temps and your golden.

I tow a small 4' x 4' Harbor Freight trailer behind my Ty. It's the only way I can get my sons racing go kart to the track. The trailer weighs 180 lbs empty, and its got about 100lbs of stuff on it plus the kart- which weighs 260 with my son in it. I *should* be well below 500 lbs total. Even with the light load I can feel it back there. I try to stay out of boost when towing, and sometimes its hard to accelerate slow enough to keep the boost gauge from registering.

I have the orignal ad by GMC titles "WHO SAYS THE SYCLONE CAN'T TOW?" hung in my office. The ad shows a Sy towing a boat and that the Sy has a 2,000 lb towing capacity.

Yep. What they said.

Get a good IC system (a good front mount with a scoop is ideal for this situation). A good transmission (4L80E would have no problems IMO). Add some better rear suspension (Helper bag systems are cheap and work great). And use a Weight Distributing Hitch system.

With those 4 systems upgraded, you'll be OK (not great, but OK) to tow some decent loads. I'd say 4,500lbs would be tops with the above listed upgrades. The chassis, and overall size of the truck doesn't lend itself to much more than that safely IMO.

Without those mods, I'd stick to 1,000lbs or less on the trailer. No worse than 4 healthy guys in the truck at that level!

Re: Towing

I'd like to see this original GMC advertisement. Especially considering all the Sy's I know of have a 500lb bed limit

Re: Towing

The main problem is getting that impeller wheel so damn hot on the turbo it starts to come apart. This could happen with loading the sy/ty down too much. How much is too much is the question.

Its stated in the owners manual that it can cause driveline failure because of the clutches in the transfer case not being made to handle such a thing, I would say thats a very possible problem as well.

Nah, Bravadas and Astro vans had the exact same case and they are rated to tow like 5000lbs..

The problem is the torque of the motor. The extra weight adds additional load which also help build boost quicker. 420-440 ft-lbs torque plus the extra towing weight is going to put alot of stress on the transmission. The transmission already barely holds up to the torque when racing.

Ah yes, forgot about that, yeah.
