SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 19 @ ALBERTA SOLO ASSOCIATION **AUTOCROSS**

Solo 2, also refered to as Autocross, is a non wheel-to-wheel competition in which drivers negotiate a miniature road course that is marked out by orange rubber construction cones (pylons). Cars run the course one at a time in a competition against the clock. Each "run" of the course is timed and the lowest run time wins. Competitors are classed so they compete only against vehicles with comparable performance, thereby putting more emphasis on driver skill. The courses are designed to challenge the driver's abilities rather than the car's horsepower. Car classification is determined by the type of car and the amount of modification, if any.

Solo 2 is a very precise type of competition. Victory is measured in thousandths of a second and competitors are penalized for each pylon they knock over or move. Since the average course is about sixty to ninety seconds long and pylon penalties range from two to five seconds, knocking over a pylon in Solo 2 is tantamount to stopping for lunch in a road race. Solo 2 teaches the ultimate in car control, increases hand/eye coordination and provides intense competition, all within the confines of a very safe environment.

Solo 2 is one of the easiest types of motor sport to get involved in. Competitors are required to use a helmet with a minimum tagged SNELL rating specified by the Governing Body of the Region, have functioning seat belts, safe tires and a well-maintained vehicle. Average entry fees are $10 to $20 for this type of event.

As a participant in any Solo event, whether or not you are a member of any car club, you need a car, helmet and valid driver's license. You are expected to arrive, complete a technical vehicle inspection and complete registration before registration closes. Some clubs do not allow late registration, some make you forfeit one of your runs, some charge a late registration fee. The only time a participant is exempt from late registration penalties is if they have made previous arrangements with a local event organizer. You can attend as many or few events as you'd like and you don't need to be a member to run. Preregistration is done online at www.karelo.com. We limit events to 60 cars so registering online and early is best to make sure you get a spot. Non-members simply pay the Guest rate. Tell the friendly Registration people you are new and they'll be glad to direct you accordingly. Read the rules using the link on the Home page in your spare time.

We have loaner helmets if you don't have one of your own. Nothing can be looose on or inside the car, tires must not have cord showing, the battery must be bolted down properly, the interior and trunk empty of loose items, including the spare. The spare can stay if it's also bolted down properly - most take it out to save the weight. Lots of competitors bring a Rubber Maid tote bin to keep their stuff in because it's dry and somewhat secure. Add air to your tires - 5 to 10 lbs. over the manufacturer specs. then adjust for handling at the event - an over inflated tire gives up less traction than an under inflated one.

When you arrive at the site, empty your car, take it to the Tech area to have it inspected, register and pay at the Registration table, put the car number they give you on your car with shoe polish (on the glass, it comes off with water), tape, or make up magnetic material to make numbers or digital number segments. Do a course walk to learn where the course goes before the 1st car goes out. Run with the group and work the course when assigned, you learn this by attending and paying attention at the Driver's Meeting. Every event entrant is required to help with marshalling the course during the event, which may include working the start/stop box, righting pylons knocked down during runs, flagging, etc. Some clubs will withhold your run times or even disqualify you if you do not actively work the course. In most cases, the people who are running the event are also competing in it, therefore everyone's help is appreciated.

ASA events are normally held at the Griesbach Parade Square.

Schedule:

8:30-9:30 Registration (must check-in/pick form by this time)
8:30-9:45 Tech
10:00 Drivers Meeting & Course Walk
10:30 First car out.

Non-Members: $25.00

To ensure that everyone who wants to get on the track gets registered in time I need your help!!! We need to moniter www.karelo.com to find out whent he event gets listed.

This is what they told me-----> "You won't find the event on Karelo until it is 'put up' by the club. This usually happens a couple of weeks before the event. Stay tuned to Karelo.com to see when registration is available. Yes, those interested in autocrossing their trucks can just register as guests online using Karelo then just attend on the 19th. Hope to see you there."

-Please reply to this thread if you are coming and whether you will be racing or not.

-There will be a BBQ and drinks after the track at my place. You can pm or email me for directions but most of you can just follow me there from the track. Dinner will be $10 per person, We will supply the pop, but BYOB, will will stop by the Beer store on the way from the track to my place.

If you are running a truck they'll want it to be reasonably low - they won't let you run if they consider it a roll-over risk. It doesn't have to be anything special, just low enough to keep it on its wheels!
