im assuming your are referring to the stock air intake tube that lays over the radiator and goes into the intake side of the turbo.

yes, you can take it off and put a fine mesh screen over the turbo inlet. will it help any? you might get slightly cooler air to the turbo and your taking out the restrictive airflow from the stock intake, but i wouldnt call it effiecient.

plus, if you daily your truck, you run the risk to destory the turbo with fine dust, dirt, water, and other tiny objects that will make it through the mesh while driving.

look into doing an aftermarket airbox that brings in air from the fender, or doing a 90* elbow off the turbo with a cone filter on the end.

How much more power do you think you'll make with this mod and how much will it cost you for a new turbo. Thats for you to determine if it's worth it. Taking off a filter and piping to gain 20hp is pretty retarded imho. However if you think you'd gain 200hp go for it. :rotf:

could i use my stock elbow (orange) , and a K&N cone?? or isnt the elbow stout enough to support the weight?

You need more space than that... unless you plan on running without a hood. The cone filter won't fit pointed straight up. If you've relocated your battery, you might be able to make it work with those parts alone, but I'm not 100% sure on that... its been a few weeks since I looked that over in my truck.

I had mine that way for a little while until I deleted a few things and made more room.. But if your going to go this route there's very limited room so the filter would have to be small or shorter then a normal cone filter.

also there's another thread about this I think

That's what I did. You will need a short 3 inch O.D. adapter piece to clamp the filter to the orange elbow as well as to provide a bung for the PCV on the passenger side of the truck:

The end of the K&N tucks right into the "hole" in the fender...

That was the way I had mine, and had my battery underneath, but I couldnt get my battery secure enough so I bought a very small filter and had it pointing straight up from the orange elbow.

Right now im working on doing something like this for my battery so I can switch back to that setup.

That short K&N....anyone have experience with it? And what about the hose that connects to the long airbox...can it be plugged or rerouted?

And the OP should know it looks like the battery has been relocated in several of those pics.

That hose that connects to the stock crossover pipe is for your pcv system and can be rerouted, left open or have a small filter placed on the end but don't plug it.

Roger that. I don't like the looks so much of the smaller filter on the turbo but I think it could be effective in adding a small amount of hp. Maybe hot engine air would cancel it out. Who knows.

Yea I don't thik any body has a clear yes or no answer on whether or not it's better to have a restrictive intake that supplies cooler air or no restriction and warmer air.. I think personally on forced induction cars it doesn't matter asss much but wtf do I know I just like the sound of the turbo with the stock cross over off :)
