Restoring some CCW Wheels for the Syclone

I bought this wheels off a vette guy that I guess had to much money and didnt really care about them. Must be nice to not care about a set of $2500 wheels but he did pull up with a Bentley GT when I meet him to purchase them. Anyway the wheels are CCW Classics in 18x10.5 in the front and 18x12 in the back. The wheels are 3 piece and 100% aluminum. When I looked at the wheels they were actually rusted on the inside of the rim and where the lugs bolt the wheels to the hubs. The wheels themselves are in great shape no curb marks or road rash just alot of oxidation, rust and baked on brake dust.

My goal to is to polish them to a chrome like luster. If I'm not happy with that the centers will get anodized black and the lips will be polished. The center caps are blank and I will ge either GMC or Syclone engraved onto them to give a little factory appeal. Then they get BFG KDW rubber 335/30/18 for the back and 295/35/18 for the front

Here is what I'm starting with to give you some idea of the before

I went online to the vette, viper, and supra forums to see what these guys where using on there ccw wheels, to restore and maintain there wheels. Many different answers, I did get alot of positives about Diamond truck box polish found at Lowes for a rough polish and the Adams metal polish for the final stage polish.

So I disassembled each wheel and started with 1200 wet sand paper and worked my way to 1500 followed by 2000.

Once done with the sanding I started with a drill and a cloth ball and the diamond polish

Waiting on the Adams Polish to be here tues or wed but here is what they look like rubbed out with the Diamond Polish there a little bit a hazing that the Adams Polish will completely clear up

I have about 8 hrs in this wheel. I'm hoping once they have been done one time it will much less work to maintain them. I've also looked into Zoop Seal which seals aluminum wheels

And these came in fri the BFG kdw 335/30/18

Once I get each one finished and the tires mounted I'll post pics of each wheel and then once they are installed on the truck

Re: Restoring some CCW Wheels for the Syclone

Wow those last pics look awesome, cant wait to see them even more shiny!

The torque thrusts i bought were in similar shape, neglected for many years but were stored inside so they werent as bad, but very very hazed. I will have to check out that diamond plate box polish, it looks like its just what I need. Do you apply that by hand or with a polishing ball/drill?

Yeah one wheel down 3 to go. Once they are all done I have to find a sealer or some way to protect them long term. Powder coating is our bc they lose some luster and also the powder yellows over time.

Does anyone know any place that might be able to engrave the center caps? Should I do a GMC logo, Syclone or leave them blank?

How much does a set of CCW's in that kind of shape go for if you are willing to share?

I would go with the no engraving, that way if someone wants to buy them your not SOL. Looks amazing though, awesome work.

Personally I wouldn't go for the polished look as it's harder to keep clean. I would go brushed, and then clearcoat the rims. Again that's me, your the lucky bastige that got an awesome set of wheels on the cheap!

Yup in lowes by the truck boxes.

As far as what I paid for them if your familiar with CCW CLASSICS they are between 600-700 a rim so give or take $2500 new for these wheels. I picked them up for $1600 then sold the tires for $400 which bought the back 335 brand new KDW so right now i have $1600 into them and all I need is new front tire which are about $400 so for $2000 I have a complete set of CCW wheels with new rubber.

Oh yeah they only weight 16lbs also for 18x12 wheel

Good job man! I just restored a set myself, the 20 slots between the spokes is the worst part. Can't wait to see them on your truck.

Well this weekend I finished two more wheels

Only one left and the can be mounted and balanced. It's amazing what some places want to charge to mount and balance 335's on big wheels like this. They are crazy.

I have done it twice on the lips and once on the spokes. It really does work, I just havent had time to really get them cleaned up. I havent polished them since before we took it to the track in September.

Ive told a bunch of other people about that stuff too, it really does work a lot better than regular aluminum wheel polishes (mothers etc)

Hopefully over the winter I can get them looking like yours! !

If they are scratched wet sand them with 2000 grit sand paper and then polish them out with a drill and the polish it's all I use in them
