Re: which intercooler pump is the best

Copied from my other reply...--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, from my experience with intercooler pumps on my Impala, after 4 different pumps in one year, the following is my recommendation.

This is the pump GM uses on the Cobalt SS. It is so quiet that you can't even tell it's running. I have had mine in use for over a year now with no problems.

Pick pump #4. the extra money is well worth the reliability!

i know i can get one at an rv shop that will wok fine but i want one that will work the best any suggestions.

I am running this pump http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/wwg/itemDetailsRender.shtml?ItemId=1611772746 and it really moves the water, built like a battleship too. Not sure how long it will last I just installed it but it has a one yr. warranty and it's CG/marine rated so I expect quite a bit longer. Oh and with the 3/4 NPT inlet & outlet, you can go up to 1in. hose for better flow and cooling volume  .

Here is a link to a similar question I posted not too long ago, and my solution. So far its working good. I dont have any hard data to show if its better or worse than the stocker- but damn it moves some water! For under $30 I got it with a 1 year free replacement warranty. I bolted it in the stock location, and just used brass garden hose fittings on the stock hoses.

That is a shurflo pump. The Aqua Tiger http://www.shurflo.com/pages/Marine/marine_product_sum/marine_sum_docs/general_purpose/aqua_tiger.html
I picked up the Johnson pump on EBAY for $65 including shipping.

I've had a Shurflo on for 8+ years now. It's loud, but it works.

2nd choice would be the harbor frieght/northern tool model.

I've removed a few Johnsons, and Atwoods. They don't seem to have enough pressure to overcome the bends and restriction in a typical system.

Go with the Johnson it fits the stock location w/o mods. Shurflo does not. Search for the HOTWIRE tip too. I got mine at APE (search for the link info)

[Quote: Of more importance, I'm running 5/8ths inch hose as well as fittings. If you want to slow the effective speed of the water you can get larger lines. This will slow down the speed of the coolant as well as raising the capacity.

A couple notes regarding the pump:

* Install a potentiometer if you want to slow it down. I've been meaning to do this for awhile so I can get the IC pump flow in it's "sweet spot" so that I can add some more timing.

* As noted above, try usingt the largest lines you can. I'm bumping the whole system up to 3/4ths inch ID. :Quote]

This is why I mentioned using a pump with 3/4 npt fittings so you can go up to 1in. hose and the largest CCHE you can fit (mine is custom fabed to fit the cutout in the core support). More VOLUME not just speed or pressure. Pressure / speed do nothing for thermal transfer. Ever hear of an engine overheating by not having a thermostat? Same thing.
